Neil McCauley Obituary

Neil McCauley
Born: September 26, 1943 in AZ
Died: March 4, 2024 in Sun City West, AZ
On Monday March 4, 2024, Neil McCauley, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 80. Neil was born on September 26, 1943, to Emmett and Margaret McCauley in Aurora, Illinois. He grew up on the family farm in Oswego with his four brothers Rodney, Bill, David, and Bob.
Neil leaves behind his wife Lynn ("Penny"), to whom he was married for 57 years. Together they had three children, the oldest of which is Sue (Mike) Marrinan and their children Meghan (Caeleb) Dressel - who recently gave birth to Neil's first Great-Grandchild August Wilder Dressel, and Danny, who currently resides in Jacksonville, FL. Neil's middle child is Tom (Mindy) McCauley, of Carbondale, Colorado, and their two children Drew and Kendall. The youngest child is Patti (Marc) Wietting, and they have three children: Maddie, Kailey, and Brady and reside in Joliet, Illinois. Neil is survived by his brother Bob McCauley and wife Kathy, of Grand Island Nebraska, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Neil attended Oswego High School, graduating in 1961, and participated in various athletics and 4H. He continued his athletic career at Western Illinois University where he lettered in Wrestling. He graduated from WIU in 1965 with a degree in Physical Education, taking his first job as a PE teacher and Football & Wrestling coach at Naperville Community High School. When the school split to form Naperville North in 1970, he moved over and to help launch the athletic program as a football and wrestling coach, and to serve as the Instructional Coordinator for Health & PE. NNHS began fielding varsity teams in the 1975-76 academic year, although with very limited success as there were no seniors on any roster. Neil hung up his coaching whistle in 1977 to become the school's second athletic director and spent the next 26 years building the Huskie program into an athletic powerhouse across the state of Illinois. By the time he had retired in 2003, the Huskies had won 11 team state championships and over 50 individual state titles. Neil believed those humble beginnings directly contributed to the success that current Huskies now experience.
While his list of accolades was a long one, including being inducted into the Illinois Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, the Illinois Wrestling Coaches & Officials Hall of Fame, and having the entire Athletic Complex at Naperville North named in his honor, his contributions were felt much further than the athletic fields, courts, and pools. Neil took a particular passion in developing young athletes and preparing them for leadership positions which awaited them further in life, and he targeted passionate coaches who shared that same vision. He firmly believed that athletic participation was a privilege and not an entitlement, and while sometimes not popular, he never wavered from that philosophy and the responsibilities that come with the title of "student-athlete".
Neil was also a long-time member at Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville, serving in various roles, but none more important than ensuring his children understood and appreciated the role of Jesus in their lives. Upon his retirement in 2003, Neil and his wife spent much of their time enjoying the country, traveling back and forth between Naperville and Sun City West, Arizona. This continued for almost 17 years until they decided to become full-time Arizona residents in 2021. While Parkinsons Disease may have claimed increasing portions of his final years, he was able to ward that off by working the boxing bags at Benavilla, a non-profit adaptive gym in Surprise, AZ. For now, the family is tentatively planning on a Celebration of Life back home in Illinois in fall of 2024, but until then for those wishing to make a donation in honor of Neil, the family would be grateful if you would consider supporting Benevilla at https://benevilla.org/donation.

I was in the NNHS class of 1979. I always loved and respected Mr McCauley. My funny story was how many times I broke a window in the field house practicing my fast pitch since we always had the catcher set up right in line with the corner window. Even pro pitchers have a wild pitch now and then. Neil would come in and say Jansen....! He always did his best for the students. Thoughts and prayers to the whole family.

Always had such a caring spirit for his athletes. He ensured he held us to a high standard, and I am grateful for the lessons he taught me over my fours years as a student and athlete at Naperville North. My dad, who also lost his battle to Parkinson´s enjoyed Mr. McCauley´s humor and commitment to his athletes.

Thinking of his family during this difficult time, and remembering the lessons he shared.

Always a Huskie.

Mr. McCauley was influential to me as my wrestling coach and mentor at NNHS as the first freshman only class. There were no upper classmen to teach us or guide us in the transition from middle school to high school and my memories of his experience and insights contributed to my success as a wrestler and being a better person. We had many conversations on and off the mats that still resonate with me 50 years later.
Condolences to Mr. McCauley and his family.

In addition to being a stand up guy who couldn't stand seeing somebody being treated badly, he was one of the funniest people I ever met. Every Friday night, Neil and Penny came to our restaurant in downtown Naperville where he would sit for hours regaling us and our staff with stories that had us rolling on the floor.

One of the funniest things he ever said to me came one time at the beginning of football season when I asked him how the team looked that year. He replied, with a straight face, "Well, we're not very big...but we're slow."

And the time I told him a joke that caused him to laugh so hard I thought he might have a heart attack was when, in a thick Irish accent, I told him the one about O'Malley's goat.

Neil was one of the finest men I've ever had the honor to call a friend.

But his biggest moment always came on St. Patrick's Day when we would throw a huge party for our regular customers. When the song "McNamara's Band" came over the speaker system, Neil would get everyone up on their feet and lead them marching through the restaurant singing at the top of their lungs.

I first knew Neil as a gymnastics official when I worked the Naperville North Invite every January, he was always gracious and supportive of the girls program and the officials. I later had the privilege of working with Neil at Naperville North as Dean of Students and assistant gymnastics coach. His support and professionalism with athletes, parents, coaches and colleagues made him the best athletic director I ever had the privilege to work with during my time at North. He held athletes and coaches to high standards and his integrity, concern and expectations always guided the athletic program. He will be missed but his legacy will live on in all the athletes and coaches who had the opportunity to experience his influence.

I knew Neil for many years first as a gymnastics official who regularly worked the Naperville North Invite. He was always in attendance and so vaery gracious to the officials. later when I became dean of Students and assistant gymnastic coach at North I had the privilege of working with Neil as part of the administrative team. He was one of the best athletic directors and colleagues that I ever had the honor and privilege to work with in my time as an educator. He was tireless in supporting all athletes young men and women always providing the best leadership and holding athletes and coaches to the highest standards. I am honored to say I had the opportunity to work with him, he will be missed but his legacy will live on in every student athlete he touched.

Well, that is a particular gut punch. Sending condolences to the family from your Naperville neighbors (2 blocks away), the Harpers. McCauley was capable of scaring the heck out of certain student athletes (doubtful just me?!) but there was always kindness and understanding when it was needed. However, the one and only time I ditched class, who was the one to catch me? Yup. McCauley. While I don't remember the punishment, whatever it was was deserved!!! May he rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing. It is to me.

A one of a kind all-around legend at NCHS and NNHS. I was privileged to know the man himself as a loyal, honorable husband, father and very competitive Aggravation player. Also my son's godfather. Sending love and condolences to Penny, Suzi, Tommy and Patti.

OMG. So sad to hear of Mr. McCauley's passing. He played and left a very lasting impression with me and many more in NCHS Class of '75 including an undefeated freshman year '72 at Naperville North, Upstate 8 Football championship in '74, his attending my induction ceremony (golf and football) to NCHS hall of fame, etc. etc. Extending my thoughts, prayer and sincere condolences to entire extended McCauley family and friends. May he rest in peace. Robb Rugg NCHS Class of '75 (Redskins)
