Nell McCommon Snipes, a loving mother and grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Nell was born on June 6, 1937, in Citronelle, Alabama where she grew up surrounded by family and friends. Nell headed to Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham in 1955. She attended there for two years until she met and married Glenn McCommon in 1957, and they moved to Austin, Texas for Glenn to finish college. In the next few years they moved frequently for his job and during that time had their two daughters, Karen and Kathy.
In 1965 they moved to Omaha, Nebraska and spent 12 years there. While in Omaha, Nell finished her Education degree at the University of Nebraska – Omaha. Glenn's job brought them to Houston in 1977, and Nell spent the remainder of her life in Houston. She was a member of Champion Forest Baptist Church for 47 years. She was actively involved in the choir, volunteered in the library and the church nursery, stuffed bulletins, and was a greeter.
Nell was a substitute teacher in both Omaha and Houston, and eventually took a full-time first grade teaching position in Klein ISD in 1979. She retired from teaching in 1994 when her first grandchild, Wesley, was born. One of her greatest pleasures was spending time with all of her grandchildren. Some of her favorite things were hummingbirds, bluebonnets, the Astros, and Blue Bell homemade vanilla ice cream, but she will always be remembered for her faith and love of family.
She is preceded in death by her husband Glenn, her parents Tommy and Vivian Welford, brother Win Welford, and second husband Stanley Snipes.
She is survived by her daughters Karen McCommon and Kathy (Robert) Cossick; grandchildren Wes (Sarah) Cossick, Krissie Cossick, Allie Cossick, and Jessica Mick; great grandson Sawyer Cossick; brother Joe (Krista) Welford; stepchildren Lori (Todd) King, Joel (Karen) Snipes; step grandchildren Heather, Austen, Forrest, Colin, Samuel, Luke, and Noah; and numerous step great grandchildren.
The family wants to give special thanks to the caregivers that loved and cared for her during her final years: Terri, Kathy, Autumn, Susan, Sabrina, Angie, Ellie, and Natalie. We also wish to thank the loving staff at Sycamore Creek Ranch.

My condolences to Nell´s family. She was a wonderful person who helped make the first grade teachers at Roth Elementary a wonderful team. She was generous to family and friends. Her family will be in my prayers. Rest in peace, Nell...
