Nellie Hortense Stewart Kennedy

Nellie Hortense Stewart Kennedy, February 20, 1944-October 28, 2025, a resident of Independence, LA. She passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at her home in Independence. She passed away at the age of 81. She is survived by her sister, Jane Odette Sullivian; her children, Cheryl L. Ferriell, Laura J. Allen (Blake Allen), Carla J. Smith (Gary Palmer), Michelle L. Dunn (Ronnie Dunn), Chas B. Kennedy “Biscuit” (Heidi Kennedy); grandsons, Jeremy McCreary, Jarrett Addison, Dakota Bankston, Justin Bankston and Charlie Kennedy (one was her favorite); granddaughters, Shelby and Hannah Kennedy and eleven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Joseph L. Smith Jr. “Jay” and Chasity R. Kennedy; her parents, Elbert and Myrtle Stewart, siblings Jimmy Stewart, Mannie Stewart, Clifton Stewart, Billy Stewart, Shirley Stewart Randall, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter. She was passionate about serving the Lord and the community. She even made sure to leave a drink and food packaged up for the men that picked up her garbage. She cherished her time spent with family and friends and took great pleasure in working in her yard, taking care of her chickens and making sure she had a cup of coffee to offer to anyone that stopped by to visit. A sweet sound fell on her ears when our Heavenly Father said well done my faithful child. Visitation will be held at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 30997 Horseshoe Road, Independence, Friday, October 31, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until funeral services at 1:00 p.m. conducted by Pastor Gene Hoyt. Burial will follow in Bankston Cemetery, Independence.
