Nellie Bernice Tackett, 80, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026.
She was born on August 28, 1945, in Virgie, Kentucky, to Tilitha Johnson. Bernice was raised in Virgie and was a proud graduate of Virgie High School. In 1966, she married Roy Tackett. Together, they moved to Columbus, Indiana, where they built their home and raised their family.
Bernice was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Quiet, sweet, and kind, she had a gentle presence that made those around her feel comfortable and loved. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life like watching Hallmark movies and soap operas. Above all, she was happiest when she was with her grandchildren. She loved traveling with her grandchildren—whether that meant simple everyday errands or trips to the beach—She was happy to go anywhere the car would take them.
She is survived by her daughters, Semantha Tackett, Veronica Sutton (Jim Linginfelter), and Janel Paden; grandchildren, Miranda (Brendon) Crook, Sara Sutton, Tia Fields, Alex Houser, and Mikayla Carpenter; and siblings, Russell (Beverly) Johnson, Geneva Branham, and Phyllis (Clayton) Elswick.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Tilitha Johnson; her beloved husband, Roy Tackett; and her grandsons, Zachary Tackett and Travis Greishop.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to The Woodlands in Muncie, Indiana for taking care of Bernice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
