Nicholas Bontempo Obituary

Waterford - Nicholas Bontempo Jr., 88, of Waterford, the husband of the late Sandra (Umrysz) Bontempo, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025. Born in Norwich, March 10, 1937, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Antoinette Bontempo.

Nicholas was a standout basketball and baseball player during his school years at Norwich Free Academy, and beyond his own achievements, he devoted much of his life to coaching young athletes. As a respected youth coach in football, basketball, baseball and wrestling, he helped shape the lives of countless young people, many of whom went on to earn All Conference and All State honors. His involvement in athletics and coaching earned him induction into the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame and recognition by the Waterford Little League North, which named "Bontempo Field" at Quaker Hill School in his honor.

He is survived by his children, Catherine Bontempo; Michael Bontempo; Christine (Bontempo) Cote; stepdaughter Kimberly Ebersole; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a total of seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue https://ygrr.app.neoncrm.com/forms/donate-in-honorin-memory

Nick helped so much at Waterford North - he was a kind gentle man. I have so many fond memories. I have been thinking about him for the past month ~ when driving my his street - about 6 months ago I left him a voice mail. He has been on my mind. So sorry for your loss. I am out of Town this week and cannot make the service - but I am sending hugs to all of you. ~Anne Ogden

Nick was such a class act, I enjoyed coaching the wrestling team at Clark Lane Middle School with him for over ten years. He taught me what´s important in life and what´s trivial. May you rest in peace Nick.
