Nicholas Citterman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel - Hendricks on Feb. 14, 2026.
Nicholas Joseph Citterman, age 63 of Hendricks, MN passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD following a courageous and very brief battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of life service will be held at 10am on Saturday, February 21st at Singsaas Church, rural Hendricks. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm on Friday, February 20th at Singsaas Church with a time of sharing of memories at 7pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at a later date at the New Grove Cemetery, rural Hendricks, MN. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Hendricks, MN has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Nicholas Joseph Citterman was born on March 27, 1962 in Tyler Minnesota, to Emil and Audrey (Kockelman) Citterman, the second of four children. He grew up on a farm outside of Ivanhoe where his love of the farm and family was fostered. He grew up attending St. John Cantius Church in Wilno, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Nick graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1980. Throughout his professional years, Nick held various jobs including truck driving, farming, owning and operating Nix Tire & Auto, and most recently working his way up to Assistant Manager at Walmart in Brookings, retiring in 2021. Following his retirement from Walmart, Nick returned to the farm with his brother Tony. He enjoyed his time working on the farm, returning to his true passion.

Nick was united in marriage to Sherri Sagmoe on January 5th, 1985 in Hendricks MN. To their union, they were blessed with four children, Nicholas Jr, Shane, Walker, and Katrina. Nick's children were his pride and joy, and he was sure to always be there for them throughout life's learning opportunities.

Nick was a dedicated member of the Hendricks Fire Department, Hendricks Ambulance, and Hendricks School Board. He enjoyed playing softball, coaching youth basketball, and fostering relationships in his community and beyond.

Nick was a proud grandfather, growing effortlessly into the role without missing a beat. He made strapping a carseat into the car his second nature whenever he was called upon to watch one of the boys for the day. He made grandparenting look easy and it was clear that his life was made fuller because of the role of Grandpa, which he fulfilled wholeheartedly. It comforts our family to know that his newest grandson, Harrison, was the one welcoming Grandpa to heaven.

Nick was a hard worker all of his life, but never failed to make time for leisure. He loved farming, fishing, boating, camping, fixing things, golfing, clearance shopping at Walmart, and bargain hunting at Harbor Freight. He never turned down an opportunity to help neighbors, family, and friends with any tasks that needed completing. Additionally, Nick was always up for a friendly conversation with anyone and everyone. In recent years, Nick's family became particularly proud of his PhD, Projects Half Done, degree. He was our do-er, but now his work is finally done.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 41 years, Sherri; children Nicholas Citterman, Jr., Shane (Ashley) Citterman, Walker (Ashli) Citterman, Katrina (Carter) Flemmer; grandsons: Oliver, Windsor, and Briar Citterman; mother-in-law, Virginia Sagmoe; siblings: Wanda (Chris) Hebrank, Tony Citterman, Lisa (Tom) Przymus; brothers-in-law, Pete (MaryBeth) Sagmoe, and Todd (Jeanette) Sagmoe, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who felt like family.

Nick was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, Emil and Audrey Citterman; father-in-law, Richard Sagmoe; and his infant grandson, Harrison Flemmer in December 2025.
