Nicholas Morgan Obituary

Nicholas Groesbeck Morgan, III

1938 - 2025

Nicholas Groesbeck Morgan, III (Nick) Born December 28, 1938, the oldest of the five children of Betty Grames and Nicholas Groesbeck Morgan, Jr., died September 18, 2025. A lifelong resident of Salt Lake, Nick attended Garfield, Dilworth and Rosslyn Heights grade schools, Hillside Jr. High, and East High School. He graduated with degrees from Weber State University, Westminster College, and the University of Utah, where he was affiliated with the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Nick began his lifelong career in the field of law enforcement as a motorcycle officer and rose to the rank of Major in the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. At the Utah Department of Corrections, he served as Inspector General, Director of Administrative Services, and Deputy Director. Before his retirement in 2005, he was Director of Fleet Operations for the Salt Lake County.

Militarily, Nick was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was a Colonel, Chief of Security Forces Air Combat Command.

His association with friends from East High School and his Beta Theta Pi days at the University of Utah led to strong bonds of friendship that lasted his entire life. His passion for learning garnered a library of books that filled his home. Two of his favorite subjects of study were History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and World War II. He was generous in his sharing his knowledge in both teaching and discussion.

Nick married Sherry Smith in 1959, and together they had two daughters, Kimberly Morgan Bezanson (Ed) and Jennifer Morgan. In 1971, he married Judy Rae Helston with whom he had two sons, Nicholas Ryan (Shanna Lee Ballard) and Michael Jack. In 2007, at a high school reunion, Nick became reacquainted with "the prettiest girl in the class of '57", Louise Mash Snow, and they were married on August 10, 2009.

Nick will be remembered for his playful charm, hard work ethic, humor and his generous heart. He could be counted on to share his enthusiasm, support and loving spirit. He had a deep commitment to doing right for people. Sports were a passion, even if the skill levels were never as he wanted. He loved the time he spent refereeing high school football games. He found great satisfaction in his military service. He was firm in his belief of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and loved teaching Gospel Doctrine.

Nick was proud to be the third to carry the name of his father and grandfather. He and his brother, Steve were born 15 months apart and were attached at the hip for most of their lives. Steve's death in 2007, was a great loss to him. His devotion to his mother was unending, and his reunion with them and his father will be most sweet.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stephen Grames Morgan.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Louise, and his children; daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer and sons Ryan and Mike; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his brothers, Richard (Maria Alberico), David (Melanie Dunkley), sister, Claudia (Ford) Scalley and sister-in-law, Darlyne Seymour Morgan.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation from 9:00-10:30 at the LDS Millcreek 7th Ward, 3408 S. Celeste Way, Salt Lake City, 84109. Interment to follow at Larkin Sunset Lawn 2350 East 1300 South.
