Nicholas O'Brien Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palm Royale Funeral Home & Cemetery on Dec. 29, 2025.
Nicholas James O'Brien lived a life defined by generosity of spirit and unrelenting positivity. In every interaction, he was more concerned with what he could give emotionally to others than with what he wanted for himself.
Nick was born on June 10, 1987, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Steve and Becky (Caredis) O'Brien. He graduated from Commonwealth Academy in Arlington, Virginia, in 2006. Nick earned a degree in journalism from the University of Massachusetts and attended classes at American University in Washington, DC. During high school, Nick spent summers working as a camp counselor in Bethesda, Maryland-an early reflection of his instinctive care for others.
Professionally, Nick worked as a researcher, analyzing topics on weekend political television programs and critiquing website design and video content. His favorite job, however, was at his beloved Newseum in Washington, DC, where he led tours and wrote trivia questions for the museum's website, covering entertainment, news, and sports-subjects he knew deeply. Nick fell in love with television game shows at an early age and was virtually unbeatable at Wheel of Fortune. He possessed encyclopedic knowledge of game show history-from hosts and networks to air dates and format changes. Nick enjoyed writing television scripts and recording them with friends who played the roles he created. Trips to New York City with Nick bypassed iconic landmarks in favor of entire days at the Museum of Television and Radio. For him, it was pure joy-his candy store.
Nick had an extraordinary mind. He memorized everything from birthdays and anniversaries to the flight and seat numbers of every airline trip he took from the age of five. If you wondered what day of the week your birthday would fall nine years from now-or thirteen years ago-Nick knew the answer. His parents relied on his remarkable recall long before artificial intelligence existed. And if there was ever a word Nick could not spell, the world never discovered it.
A devoted Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, Nick founded a chat group leading up to football games and remained eternally optimistic-like so many true Husker fans. Some of his happiest memories were watching Nebraska football with his "Husker Brothers" in Washington, DC.
Nicholas is survived by his parents and his sister, Alexandra Kathryn O'Brien.
If we step back and ask what truly defined Nick, it wasn't his memory, or his knowledge, or even his passions. It was his kindness. Nick was a gentle soul. When doctors, therapists, or caregivers asked about his condition, he invariably turned the question back to them, wanting to know how they were doing. He gave far more than he ever received. God infused Nick with abundant positivity, and it made all the difference. Every moment of his life was an uphill climb, yet he rarely complained. Nick possessed a beautiful mind, trapped within a failing physical body. Now, he has reached the top of the mountain-and he is free.
A funeral service for Nick will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 7100 Airport Pulling Rd. N. Naples. Interment will follow at Palm Royale Cemetery, 6790 Vanderbilt Beach Rd. Naples.
Memorial contributions in Nicholas' memory may be made to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation.
