Nicholas Sekera Jr, 58, of Brick, NJ, passed away at Westchester Medical Center on March 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Nicholas was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas Sekera Sr. and Muriel Heck, as well as his mother-in-law, Athena Hadjimarkos. He is survived by his loving wife, Dimitra, their children, Niko and Athena, his sister-in-laws, Marina, Angela, and Sharon, his brother-in-laws, Peter, Father Andrew, and Dimitri, his sister, Cyndi Saletel, and a large, close-knit family who will cherish his memory forever.
Nicholas was born on July 7, 1966, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he spent his formative years. In 1986, a life-changing moment came when he met Dimitra, a woman who would later become his wife. Following their meeting, Nicholas made the decision to move to Belleville, NJ, where he and Dimitra began their life together.
Their relationship blossomed over the years, and after nine years of dating, Nick and Dee tied the knot in 1995. In 1999, their family grew with the arrival of their first child, a son, whom they named Niko. Three years later, in 2002, their family expanded once again with the birth of a daughter, Athena, completing their household with love and joy.
In 2002, Nick and his family packed up their belongings and made the move down the shore, settling in a place that would become his forever home. It was here, surrounded by the scenic beauty of the coast, that he would spend the rest of his life. Nick worked as a district manager for the San Francisco Music Box Company until 2001. After that, he became the business manager of a storage facility, a role he held until 2025. In both positions, he was known for his hard work and dedication, always focused on doing his job to the best of his ability.
Nick was an avid sports fan through and through. His passion for sports ran deep, especially when it came to his beloved teams - the Mets, Jets, and Rangers. His loyalty to these teams, despite the inevitable highs and lows, was unwavering. As you can imagine, rooting for these teams over the years built a lot of character and gave him countless memories of both triumphs and heartbreaks.
Nick also had a special place in his heart for his cats. To him, they were more than just pets - they were like children, offering him companionship, comfort, and unconditional love. His cats would often run to him the moment he walked in the door, eager for his attention, and would curl up beside him, content and relaxed in his presence. Their bond was unmistakable, and it was clear that the feeling was mutual. Nick's love for them was evident in the care and affection he gave, and they returned it in their own quiet, loving way.
In 2022, with his Nona (Godmother) Effie Psomias by his side, Nick made the heartfelt decision to be christened in the Greek Orthodox faith. This significant step was an important moment in his spiritual journey, reflecting his desire to embrace the Greek heritage and deepen his connection to his faith. It was a decision that brought him a sense of peace and fulfillment, marking a new chapter in his life.
For more than two decades, Nick has fought heart problems with strength and resilience. Throughout his ongoing battle, he has continued to work tirelessly to provide for his family, maintaining a positive outlook even in the most challenging moments. Unfortunately, in February, Nick's heart failure progressed to its final stages, leading to an emergency hospitalization. Through every challenge, he has battled with steadfast determination and a spirit that never surrenders.
Nick will always be remembered as a kind, loving, and caring man, whose greatest joy was his family. He had an unwavering devotion to his wife, Dimitra, and their children, Niko and Athena. To Nick, his family was his world - his source of strength, love, and happiness. His commitment to them was evident in everything he did, and his love for them was the heart of his life. Nick's legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
The viewing will take place at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Friday April 4th from 10-11am. The funeral service will be at 11am and interment will follow at St. George Greek Cemetery. For condolences please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
