Nicholas Kent Sumpter, 39, of Stillwater, passed away on January 25th, 2023. He was born at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico on February 13, 1983, to Kenneth Sumpter and Diane (Langham) Sumpter.
Growing up in an Air Force family, Nicholas lived in a variety of places and enjoyed family adventures that gave him many unique experiences, however, home has always been at the family farm in Oklahoma, where he felt most at peace. Nicholas was active in church growing up and was active in his church youth group. He also loved to be in the water spending summers at the pool and participating in swim team in high school, and more recently sharing his skills by giving swim lessons and working as a lifeguard. Nicholas was known for his friendliness along with his willingness to lend a helping hand or encouraging word.
After graduating from Enid High School, he attended Northwest Oklahoma State and later received his Associate's Degree from Northern Oklahoma College, and was a current student at Oklahoma State University (OSU) pursing a degree in Theatre. Nicholas was passionate about acting and had a love for the performing arts. He was a versatile actor with a talent for bringing a wide range of characters to life. He excelled in comedy, drama, and everything in between, showcasing his range and skill on stage. He was well-known in the local theatre community, and appeared in theatres across Oklahoma, including the Gaslight Theatre in Enid, the Town & Gown Community Theatre in Stillwater, the Oklahoma State University Theatre in Stillwater, and Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park in Oklahoma City. He also graced the stages of theatres in Tulsa and Kansas City, MO. He had an extensive acting career, appearing in many well-known productions. Some of his notable appearances were in productions of "Harvey," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Guys and Dolls," "The Importance of Being Ernest," "A Comedy of Errors" with Shakespeare in the Park, "A Doll's House," "The Hound of Baskerville," "The Kitchen Witches," "Twelfth Night" with Shakespeare in the Park, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," "The Crucible," "Intimate Apparel," "Slapped!" and even appeared in an online production of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged". He brought his talent, dedication, and creativity to every role, leaving a lasting impact on audiences and fellow actors alike. His passion, creativity, humor, and talent for acting will always be remembered.
Nicholas' two children, Eleanor and Henry, were a special part of his life. He loved sharing important parts of his life with them by taking them to places like the family farm where he took them on all his favorite adventures whether that was fishing at the pond or a hike to the creek. He was happy to share what he loved most with Eleanor and Henry. He cherished Eleanor's energy and creativity and Henry's kindness and inquisitiveness. He was so proud of the people they are becoming and always supported their individuality. He made sure they always knew just how much he loved them.
In recent weeks Nicholas had spent time reading the book of Matthew. A verse he had highlighted:
Matthew 5:4, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted".
He is preceded in death by his sister Melissa Sumpter.
He is survived by his parents Kenneth and Diane Sumpter, his sister Tricia Hanska and family, his children Eleanor Sumpter and Henry Sumpter, and his wife Kim (Sumpter) Cox.
A graveside service will be held on February 4, 2023, at 2:30PM at Oglesby Cemetery in Oglesby, Oklahoma.
