Nicholas Vendetta Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home on May 30, 2024.
Nicholas D. Vendetta, 78, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024. Nick was born on November 2, 1945, son of the late Nicholas and Rose (Parker) Vendetta. He was predeceased a year ago by his beloved wife of 57 years, Patricia Vendetta.
Nick leaves behind his sons, Michael Vendetta of East Hartford, Craig Vendetta and his wife Leslie of Suffield, and Jeffrey Vendetta of West Hartford; his sister Roxanne Cagliostro of Marlborough; his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas Vendetta and his wife Jill, and Brian Vendetta all of Delaware County, PA; his great-grandchildren, Emily and Alexander Vendetta; and his many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Nick was predeceased by his two sisters, Rose and Grace.
Nick lived life his way, on his terms. His life was spent serving his country and the citizens of Hartford, CT. He grew up in Hartford, joined the Marine Corps where he did a tour of duty in Vietnam leading a reconnaissance team behind the front lines. He earned medals of distinction including a Purple Heart. He was also a Marine Corps drill instructor, where he trained numerous classes of incoming officers at Quantico. After leaving military life, he spent 30 years as a Hartford Firefighter, where he again earned citations for his conduct and rose to the rank of Captain. He was an example for young firefighters to follow, always active in his union, Commander in Chief of VFW Post 9929, Chairman of the CT Firefighters Federal Credit Union Board, and the list goes on. Nick was a confident and determined leader in every facet of his life.
Through all this time, his devoted wife Patty was at his side. She was the love of his life. They embraced travel together with trips to Italy, Ireland, and various parts of our great country. Nick will be missed dearly, but we take comfort in knowing they are reunited again.
Calling hours will be Friday, (June 7), from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, (June 8), 10:00 a.m. at St. Brigid Church, 1083 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. Everyone is asked to meet directly at Church. Nicky was "THE BEST! What a great person on and off the job. I had the pleasure to work with Nicky at Engine 2 and what a "Blast" we had. I'm heart broken to hear of his passing, my prayers to Jeffery and the rest of the family. My memories of Nicky will never be forgotten, such a "Great" man.

My condolences to the Vendetta family. My Dad, Charlie Gallon was a Deputy Chief and Nick drove for him as a young firefighter. I remember my Dad speaking of Nick, he left quite an impression and my Dad held him in high esteem. Chief Gallon passed but always till the end was a firefighter just like Nick. Godspeed Nick.

To my dearest brother.......I have tears as I write this message. You will ALWAYS live in my heart... I have so many cherished memories of the years when we were kids growing up, and so many more memories beyond. I surely miss you already and the conversations we have had... It meant so much to me to pick up the phone to call you and say "Hello", talk to you for a bit and see how you were .... just to hear your voice.... I know you missed Aunt Patty so very much and could not be happy without her. You were BOTH a very special couple. With neither one of you here now, it has left a big hole in my heart... You stuck with me through thick and thin over the years. You were a very good brother to me. Like the song Kenny Rogers sang, "It's not easy to say good-bye"...... if I listen to my heart, I will hear your laughter once more...... I wanted to attend your service, yet, I now, walk with a cane and it is not easy for me to go long distances. If I had one wish, it would be to see you once more. Thank you for all the joy you and Aunt Patty brought into my life throughout the years. I love you forever.............. "Sissy"

My friendship with Nick goes back to 1974 when we met as fellow Fire Fighters. Nick was a GREAT Fire Fighter. As an officer he was a leader of men. He was a Man's Man! Tough as nails and with the attitude to complete the job
no matter what the challenges. I was Blessed to know him. He will forever be my buddy, pal and brother as I love him as one !
