Nick was born on December 6, 1954, in Seymour, Texas to Otto and Lillie Ptacek. He grew up on the family farm in Bomarton, Texas and developed his love for hunting, fishing, and all things outdoors. He attended Seymour High School, and after graduation in 1975, he joined the United States Air Force and went out to see the world. The Air Force sent him all over the United States and the world to such places as Izmir, Turkey and Florennes, Belgium. After military retirement in 1994, he went to work for TECCOR in the engineering lab until he medically retired in 2012. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for 45 years, and previously served as an usher on Sunday mornings.
On September 6, 1976, he married the love of his life, Karen Marie Brown. Together they raised two children, Jennifer and Anthony, and later welcomed their four adored grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, and Poppi, and always took care of everyone; he never missed an opportunity to spend time with them or be at their events.
Nick lived a full life and he never knew a stranger. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending his time hunting, fishing and camping. He worked diligently to pass this love to his children and grandchildren, taking them hunting and fishing often. He loved riding his Harley and traveling. He enjoyed family vacations every year to the beach, trips with close friends to National Parks, going on other outdoor adventures, and traveling with his beloved wife Karen to anywhere they could go.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Frances Carnahan.
Nick is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen Brown Ptacek; his daughter and son-in- law, Jennifer and Brandon Moon; his son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Hannah Ptacek; his grandchildren, Cooper Moon, Payton Ptacek, Preston Moon, and Logan Ptacek; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Eddie Joe Orsak; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and family members. He also leaves behind many lifelong friends.
Our family would like to thank his medical team, especially Dr. Larry Anderson at UTSW Medical Center in Dallas, for their unwavering dedication to helping him live his fullest life while navigating his cancer journey during the last twelve years.
Nick will be greatly missed by many, but his spirit will live on in those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Nick's name to the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth, or to Texas Parks and Wildlife.
