Obituary of Nickolas Christian Popoff
Nickolas Christian Popoff, 83, of Toms River passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025.
Born on December 28, 1941, in Charvieu-Chavagneux, France, Nick and his family immigrated to the United States in 1948, settling in
Howell Township, NJ. It was in Howell that he grew up and later met his wife, Zina, with whom he shared fifty-seven wonderful years. Together, they raised a loving family in Ocean County, NJ.
In 1962, Nick proudly served in the United States Air Force. After receiving an honorable discharge as an Airman Second Class, he began a fulfilling career as a self-employed finish carpenter, utilizing the skills and discipline he gained during his military service. These qualities helped shape his exceptional work ethic and sustained him through many years of dedicated service. Prior to retiring, Nick spent nine rewarding years working at Home Depot in Lakewood, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment. A man of faith, he was a member of St. Alexander Nevsky R.O. Cathedral in Howell.
With his charming personality and quick wit, Nick made friends easily. He was always ready with a silly joke. A devoted father of four, he loved attending his children's sports games and took immense pride in his children's athletic and academic achievements. He had a deep love for animals and animal welfare. Nick was a voracious reader; history and mystery books were his favorite reads. Other pastimes he enjoyed were listening to music…very loudly (which is probably why he always said "Huh?" when you spoke to him), watching football, fishing, playing golf or cards, and imparting Pop-Pop's words wisdom to his grandchildren.
Nick was predeceased by his parents Boris and Elisabeth (Günther) Popoff, his brother, Boris B. Popoff and his sister, Elizabeth Hughes. He is survived by his wife, Zinaida Popoff; children, Larissa Connell, Nickolas J. Popoff, Michael C. Popoff, and Andrew Popoff and his wife, Suean; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his two cherished cats, Max and Blacky.
He leaves behind a deeply saddened circle of friends who will forever hold his memory dear.
A Panikhida will be held at St. Alexander Nevsky R.O. Cathedral, 200 Alexander Avenue, Howell, NJ on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
