Nicole Marie Madeleine Shelhammer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evans Funeral Home - Houston on Nov. 10, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Nicole (Huc) Shelhammer, age 82, daughter of Jeaneau and Yvonne (Brunet) Huc was born August 11, 1943, on the island of Djerba, Tunisia, Africa. She passed away November 7, 2025, at her home, surrounded by those she loved.
She is preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and one brother, Alain.
She is survived by her son: Jean-Louis of St. Dizier, France; two sisters: Colette Stelljes of France, and Chantal Hanks of Djerba, Tunisia; two brothers: Gerard and Serge Huc of France; and one granddaughter: Leila of Panama City, Florida, with several nieces and nephews.
Nicole grew up on the island of Djerba, off the northern coast of Tunisia, Africa. She later moved to France, and there she had her only son, Jean-Louis in 1963. Three years later, on June 6, 1966, she "landed" on U.S. soil. She met her husband Donald Shelhammer of Roubidoux, Missouri in Rome, New York, they married April 10, 1969. Nicole was a member of the Houston United Methodist Church, Houston, MO. She had received Christ as her savior as a small child by the catholic church. She served him through her charitable acts towards the community.
Nicole would be described as kind and caring by those around her, many of which are considered family. She loved gardening, tending to the flowers gave her purpose, when she wasn't helping others. She had the best garden, and brightest flowers thanks to her very green thumb. Nurturing was in her nature, not only in her garden and plants, but with people as well.
When she was not in her garden, she was in her kitchen. Most likely cooking up the best meal in any person's life. There wasn't a single person that sat at her dinner table that didn't leave satisfied. Not to mention if you walked through that front door, she would ask if you were hungry and would make something before you left, whether you were or not. She always made sure you left full and happy.
Some of her favorite past times were sitting in her chair with her dog, Lucky, doing a crossword, all the while having Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy on the television. Sometimes she would pick up some yarn and hooks and crotchet instead of doing crosswords. In her earlier years she loved having dogs around. Nicole and her husband were known for rescuing animals and caring for them. Giving them the love they lacked. She always cared for more people, animals, plants, anything really, then you could count on your fingers and toes. That's just who she was, a caregiver till the end.
A celebration of life gathering is planned for Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Evans Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Houston Senior Center or Texas County Food Pantry in memory of Nicole. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Evans Funeral Home of Houston, MO. Online condolences may be left at www.evansfh.com.
