Nila Jordan Clines, 93, of Guntersville, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, at Shepherd's Cove Hospice in Albertville. Mrs. Clines was the third of four children of Roy and Esther Hudgins Jordan. She was birthed by her grandmother, Ethel Whitlow Jordan, on March 8, 1932, at the family home in Mount High. She was a 1950 graduate of Albertville High School and received a special certificate for being neither absent nor tardy for 12 years. She married the late Tom Clines in 1953. The couple worked at a can manufacturing company in Chicago for less than a year before moving to Guntersville. Mrs. Clines held various clerical and waitressing jobs before she was hired at the Marshall County Judge of Probate office on Oct. 1, 1962. She worked at the front counter several years before becoming the recording clerk in the record room. For many years she composed the county's poll list published in the local newspapers. She was also an absentee box poll clerk for many elections. Upon her retirement on March 31, 1992, she was presented a framed resolution adopted by the Alabama House of Representatives commending her "exemplary service," dedication and loyalty to the public and the five probate judges who held office during her 29½ tenure. After leaving the probate office, Mrs. Clines worked at the Marshall County Baptist Association office for several years before retiring again. She was among the oldest members of Connect Church of Guntersville, and its predecessors Church at Lake Guntersville and Victory Baptist Church. She was involved in the Women's Missionary Union and spent many Sunday mornings helping in the nursery. Mrs. Clines was known for her love of sweets. She enjoyed baking cakes and candy, particularly during the Christmas season. She also enjoyed working word games in puzzle books. She travelled on several AARP-sponsored trips, and she enjoyed meeting people while delivering Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Clines was loved by all for her sweet and kind nature. She returned that love many times over to her close and extended families, and to her friends and others. She is survived by one son, Keith Clines of Huntsville; one daughter, Melissa (Bob) Peebles of Guntersville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Clines; daughter, Sandra Winfrey; son, James Leander Clines; parents, Roy and Esther Jordan; sisters, Katherline Bolton and Marjorie Jordan; and brother, Earl Ted Jordan. A graveside service will be Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. at Marshall Memory Gardens with David Kirby officiating and Carr Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Chris Isom, Wesley Shaneyfelt, Mike McCormack, Charles Bolton, Richard Bolton and Chuck Jordan. Special pallbearers will be Landon McCormack, Luke Isom, Owen McCormack, Braxton Shaneyfelt and John David Lynch. The family would like to thank Shepherd's Cove Hospice, Marshall Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Dr. William A. Nixon for their compassionate care of Mrs. Clines.
