Nina Staples Smithson, age 92, of Shawboro, NC, died at Laurel Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, on Sunday, December 7, 2025. She was born in Currituck County, on February 13, 1933, to the late Curtis Seymour Staples and Mabel Kight Staples. Nina was the widow of Alvin L. "Pete" Smithson, Sr., her husband of 61 years, who died in 2013. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Deborah S. Chappell and her husband, Sandy, of Wilson, NC and Pamela S. Smithson and her husband, Billy, of Shawboro, NC; a son, Pete Smithson, Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Shawboro, NC; seven grandchildren, Missy C. Parker (Chris), Amy C. Harp (Charles), Cameron Smithson Chappell (Lesley), W. E. Smithson, Jr., Ryan Smithson (Brooke), Brock Smithson (Chelsea), and Collin Smithson (Megan); seventeen great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Pastor Charles Rickard officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby. Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery. Nina's service will be live streamed on her obituary page at www.Twifordfh.com.
