Nina Marie Underdue

Nina Marie Burgess Underdue, daughter of the late Rice and Elnora (Yellordy) Burgess, was born on August 31, 1948, in Halifax County, NC. As a young child, she learned from her parents and siblings the importance of hard work, family synergy, and faith in the Lord.
At the tender age of 14, Nina met the love of her life, George Lewis Underdue. Three years later, she was granted her mother's blessing, to settle with George in Newark, NJ, where Nina worked diligently to help support both her budding family and the family she left behind in NC. Nina and George were united in Holy Matrimony in 1966 and from this union four children were born.
In addition to working for many years in domestic and manufacturing industries, Nina served as a devoted wife, mother, family member and friend every day of her life. Her unrelenting selflessness and kindness penetrated the lives of everyone she met. She was rare in her ability to see the worth and goodness of all people and to embrace them with open arms regardless of who they were and how they stepped into them. She loved others completely, non-judgmentally and incessantly no matter the circumstances.
On August 14, 2024, Nina was peacefully called to rest. She leaves to cherish her life, love and memories, her husband, George; two children, Antowan Underdue (Tamekia) and Tonita Balcom (Lewis); nine grandchildren: India Carolina, Zahnik Underdue, Sierra Underdue, Danyelle Underdue, Senei Underdue, Jason Underdue, Selah Underdue, Elle Balcom and Corey Balcom; four great-grandchildren: Tyasia Andrews, Zahara Carolina, Alad O'Neal and Joseph Underdue; her daughter-in-law, Stacie Freeman; her beloved siblings: James Burgess (Hazel) of Rocky Mount, NC, Walter Burgess (Frances) of Richmond, VA and Lillie Edwards (William) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her longtime best friend, Christine Mewborn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and dear loved ones.
Preceding Nina in death are her two sons, George and Darrell Underdue; six sisters, Dorothy Burgess, Helen Branch, Annie Crowell, Lois Pebbles, Mattie Fleming and Rosie Lee Brown; and two brothers, Merlin and Clarence Burgess.
