Niranjan Baxi Obituary
Dr. Niranjan R. Baxi, 89, passed peacefully on January 3, 2026, with family by his side.
Dr. Baxi was born in Palanpur, India, on May 31, 1936. He earned his medical degree at Grant Medical College in Mumbai, India. Soon after, he married Ranjan, who became his lifelong partner. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States with his young family and went on to build a career in internal medicine with the Veterans Administration. He spent most of his professional life caring for veterans and teaching medical students and residents in Wichita, Kansas, where he was deeply respected for his experience, expertise, dedication, compassion, and steady presence.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Baxi approached life with enthusiasm and a playful competitiveness. He enjoyed a wide range of sports, including swimming, racquetball, tennis, and table tennis, and he was an avid bridge player, both in person and online. In all his pursuits, he played with energy, joy, and a love of winning.
Dr. Baxi was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ranjan Baxi; his children, Nandita Baxi Sheth (Uday), Shefali Baltz (Michael), and Sachin Baxi (Rupal Gadhia); and his cherished grandchildren, Ravi, Maya, Sophia, Anya, and Bela. His legacy lives on through the family he nurtured, the patients he served, and the courage he showed in forging a new life across continents.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers and staff at StoryPoint Romeoville and Dover Hospice for their kindness and compassion. A special and heartfelt thank you to his private caregiver, Mary, for her extraordinary dedication, diligence, and always advocating for the best care.
A private ceremony was held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests contributions in Dr. Baxi's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, or a charity of your choice.
