Colonel Noel J. Doyle Jr., U.S. Army (Retired) passed away March 21, 2026.
He was the son of Noel J. and Mary (Skeffington) Doyle and the husband of Carolyn Baxter Doyle (deceased) to whom he was married for 59 years. He is survived by his three sons, James (Havana, FL), Mark (Broadlands, VA) and Brian (Hampton Falls, NH), two daughters-in-law, Donna Doyle and Cheryl Martin and four grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher, Lindsey and Matthew Doyle.
Colonel Doyle was born on 20 Oct 1936 in
Providence, RI. He graduated from Providence College in May 1958 with a BA in Economics and a ROTC commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. He entered the army in December 1958 and served as a Military Intelligence officer for over 30 years including two tours in South Vietnam. During his military service Colonel Doyle was a member of the US Army's Foreign Area Specialist Training (FAST) Program with a specialization in Eastern Europe. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1970 with an MA in Slavic Studies and subsequently served as the US Army Military Attache in Prague, Czechoslovakia from 1984-1987. During this assignment he was responsible for the planning and execution of the US Embassy's wreath laying program designed to commemorate the US military's participation in the liberation of Czechoslovakia during World War II, a task for which he received the Department of State Meritorious Honor Award. His military awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (with 2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 OLC) and two Air medals. Colonel Doyle retired from active duty in Aug 1989.
Colonel Doyle married "The Love of My Life", Carolyn B. Doyle, on 24 September 1960. Often referred to as Christmas Carol, Carolyn was a devoted military spouse accompanying her husband on numerous stateside and overseas assignments. In addition to sharing his love of family, Colonel Doyle was also an accomplished poet with humor and rhyme the pillars of his narrative style. His enjoyment for composing verse culminated in the August 2020 publication of his book "Baloney Sandwich Remembrances" by Xlibris Press.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 4pm to 7pm at Loudoun Funeral Chapel located at 158 Catoctin Cir SE
Leesburg, Va, 20175. A mass of Christian burial will take place at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church on Monday at St John the Apostle Catholic Church,
Leesburg, VA. A reception will follow at Loudoun Funeral Chapel following the Mass at 12pm.
Interment with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
