Nora McDowell

Nora Elena McDowell, a vibrant and charismatic woman, passed away on July 12, 2023, in Miami, Florida, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 3, 1955, in Medellin, Colombia, and moved to the United States in 1973. Although her first stop was in Miami, she decided to head north where she could learn English more quickly. She picked up the language and her adoring husband Tom while attending Northen Michigan University.
The only thing Nora loved more than sports was her family. She was a lifelong athlete who inspired those around her. Whether she was running marathons, cycling, or rooting for the Dolphins, Heat or Canes, she found joy in pushing her limits and encouraging others to do the same. You could always count on Nora to cheer her kids or grandkids on the sidelines, and never held back if she disagreed with the referee. Her most joy-filled days usually included a morning ride followed by one of her grandkids' games, and a bar-b-que with family and dear friends to whom she would always say, "I love you, man". She was just as happy in the everyday moments when she would dive in to help with grandkids who loved her "hasta el cielo".
Nora is survived by her husband Tom McDowell, her children Nicolas (Christina) and Lisa (Gregory), and her cherished grandchildren Lucas, Sophia, Michael, Marcos, Emma, and Matthew. Nora also leaves behind her siblings Maria Clara Garbati, Hilda Ramirez, Mario Restrepo, Dario Restrepo, and Jose Restrepo, who will forever hold her memory close. She was preceded in death by her mother Alicia Restrepo and father Javier Restrepo.
Professionally, she dedicated her life to accounting, and spent most of her career in the floral industry. She possessed a keen analytical mind and a practical approach to problem-solving, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Known as a straight shooter, Nora was always honest and forthright in her interactions.
Nora was a spitfire, and many will recall her bursting out singing "this girl is on fire", filling the room with her infectious spirit. She brought light and laughter wherever she went, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.

The wake will be held at Van Orsdel Funeral Home (11220 N. Kendall Drive) on Tuesday, July 18, from 5-7 pm.
A service honoring Nora's life will take place on Wednesday July 19th at the same location from 10-11 am, followed by luncheon at the home of Nicolas and Christina.

As we bid farewell to Nora; our mom, our sister, our "Tita" and our friend, let us remember her vibrant spirit, her love for family, and her zest for life. May her legacy inspire us to embrace every moment, support one another, and live life to the fullest, just as she did.
