SALEM - Norbert Henry Hettinga, 74, passed peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
Born on July 31, 1951, in Wausau, Wisconsin, he was the son of Benjamin and Effie (Fraaza) Hettinga. Norb's early years laid the foundation for a life characterized by faith, humor, love, and commitment to community.
After graduating from Marathon High School, Norb pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business and economics. His academic achievements paved the way for a successful career, but it was at a church function where Norb's life took a beautiful turn as he met his future wife, Tammy Ostendorf. United in marriage on April 20, 1974, Norb and Tammy began their journey together, initially in Chicago. There, Norb managed the Living Bible Book Shop before his career led him to a sales position at Word Music, prompting a move to Ohio.
Dedicated to both Christ and his profession, he served Word Music loyally for 20 years before joining his wife in their own retail business, Lion and Lamb Christian Resources. For three decades, they worked side by side, with locations in downtown Salem and in Niles at the Eastwood Mall, turning the bookstores into hubs for community and spiritual growth. Norb's love for people was evident in every interaction, and he became known for his ability to make deals and forge lasting bonds with customers, many of whom became friends.
Norb's jovial nature, easy smile, and infectious laugh were welcoming for many. His genuine care for others extended beyond his business, as he became a mentor and father figure to countless young people through his volunteer work with church youth ministries and his faithful presence at his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He was a pillar of support and encouragement, always ready with a loud cheer, a wise word, or a helping hand.
In his leisure time, Norb found joy in cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes, traveling with family, selling collectibles on eBay, and indulging in his favorite dessert, a slice of pie. However, it was his deep faith and love for his family that truly defined him. A devoted husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandpa, Norb was a constant presence in the lives of his loved ones, celebrating every achievement, big or small.
Norb's legacy is one of unwavering faith, gentle love, and enduring devotion to family. A man of strong commitment, his daily prayers for his family will be deeply missed. He lived a life that exemplified his values, and those who knew him were blessed by his warmth and kindness. Even in death, Norb shared his love for others by giving the gift of life as a Lifebanc organ and tissue donor. We take comfort in knowing that his faith-filled journey on earth has led him to everlasting peace and joy with his Savior.
To carry on his memory, Norb leaves his beloved wife Tammy; children he couldn't be prouder of, Ben and Ada Hettinga of McLean, VA, and Michelle Bails of Salem; grandchildren, Adam, Jared, and Esther Hettinga, and Trevor, Hadley, and Reagan Bails; and siblings, Delbert (Judy) Hettinga of Wausau, WI, Frances (Clarence) Grabko of Auburndale, WI, and Joanne (Chuck) Blank of Appleton, WI. His Brazilian foreign exchange student "son" Fábio, as well as countless nieces, nephews, and friends of the family will also spread the ripple effect of Norb's life well lived.
In addition to his parents, Norb was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Orville Schneiter of South Byron, WI.
In memory, please consider registering as an organ and tissue donor with your state BMV. Any monetary contributions will be used for a memorial park bench.
