Norma Gibson Obituary

In the evening of August 23, 2025 Norma June Gibson joined her beloved husband Riley at those beautiful gates of Heaven.

Almost everyone that knew her called her Mamaw. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Mamaw, and Sister.

Born June 12, 1950 to Vaughn and Agnes Williams of Canton, she was the only daughter with 2 brothers. A 1968 graduate of Pisgah High School, she was born and raised in Burnette Cove.

Norma was a true homemaker. Always rising before the sun she made sure Riley had breakfast, a thermos full of coffee, and a well packed lunch to get him through those long work days. When the children and grandchildren came along, she continued to make sure breakfast was made, lunches were packed, and everyone had a full belly at supper time.

She was an amazing seamstress. In her younger years she made countless numbers of wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, costumes, and quilts. But above all else she was famous for the best buttermilk biscuits and homemade cheesecakes you could find. Throughout the years she was able to pass her biscuit making onto her grandson Chance and her love for sewing and quilt making onto her granddaughter Skie.

As the grandchildren got older she pursued driving a bus for Haywood County Schools. A job she truly enjoyed for many years. There she was able to pass on many words of wisdom and tried her best to help steer her "adopted grandchildren" onto the right path.

Norma was a friend, a listening ear and shoulder to cry on when needed, but she was firm. She was never afraid to make her opinion known whether you liked it or not.

Left to celebrate, cherish, and forever love her precious memory is her daughter Rebecca Robinson (Richard). Her grandchildren Skie Rathbone (Todd), Chance Hodge (Jessie), Dalton Franklin (Annie), Hannah Thompson (Doug), and Jaxon Robinson (Cyrena). A great grandson Dalton Rathbone, and many grand-dogs. Her beloved dogs Jake and Smoke. Her brothers Jim (Debbie), Lee (Rhonda), sister in law Diane, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to our cousin Bobby Hightower for being there, helping her, and just keeping her company when we couldn't be.

She is preceded in death by her parents Vaughn and Agnes Williams, Husband Riley Gibson, and daughter Candice Gibson Franklin.

A celebration of life will take place at 2pm Saturday September 6th, 2025 at Beulah Baptist Church. Reverend Barry Clark will lead the celebration of life for the family. Receiving of friends and family will take place at the church from 12pm to 2pm before the service.

Smoky Mountain Cremations and Funeral Service of Maggie Valley is caring for the family and the online register is available at www.smokymountaincremations.com.
