Norma Mary Giguere, born Norma Carmen Marie Facchini, of Monsignor Bojnowski Manor in New Britain, comfortably passed away from complications of Covid-19 and end-stage dementia on Aug. 13.
She has been a resident of New Britain since 1936 and a resident at the Manor since 2011. She would have been 97 years old in October. She will lie in rest with family at St Mary's Cemetery.
She is survived by three loving daughters, Denise of Oregon, Marianne of Connecticut, and Nancy of Florida.
She also leaves her dear godchild and lifelong friend JoAnn Bertolo of Plainville, granddaughters Sara Benoit of Virginia and Alyssa Wood of Washington State, and grandsons Tom & John Callahan of New York and Connecticut respectively.
Norma's sister, Wanda Salter and her brother, Nilo Facchini, both preceded her in death, and between them have eight children (seven living) who are Norma's nieces and nephews.
Norma had a stimulating and full life starting with her gregarious parents who came from Italy in 1922 and after her short marriage in 1951 to Norman Giguere, who passed away seven years later in 1958 at the age of 31, leaving her with three children.
Norma was always the go-to person for family matters, whom many relied on for paperwork, translations, and medical appointments.
She so excelled at organization and communications that she loved working. She started secretarial work in 1942 at Middle Atlantic Transportation, Inc. where she met Norman.
After his death she began working, part-time, in 1963 at a small transportation company until 1969. Between 1969 and 1971, Norma & her brother Nilo and sister Wanda, shared live-in care for their parents.
In 1971, after her mother's death, Norma started working full-time at the State of Connecticut Dept of Transportation until 1985.
In 1973, Norma took a leave of absence to care for her mother and later, for a one-time episode of paralysis & loss of vision from multiple sclerosis which, after eight months, went into remission.
In 1986, she began working for the Judges of the Superior Court in Hartford until retirement in 1997.
Memory issues became apparent in the following years and eventually, in 2007, Norma moved into assisted living at St Lucians in New Britain, where she lived until falling and breaking her hip in 2011.
She then relocated to Monsignor Bojnowski Manor, where she received the best care and loving compassion from so many staff, nurses and aides, who accommodated her frequent requests for coffee and conversation, often as she sat in her wheelchair next to the Nurse's Station.
The family is deeply grateful for these wonderful people. Fai buon viaggio, Norma!
