Norma Grover Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Winthrop on Jan. 23, 2026.
Readfield - Norma Grover, 99, passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Norma was born in Portland, ME on October 15, 1926, the daughter of Henry and Laura (Hamilton) Fountain. Norma graduated from North Yarmouth Academy with the love of her life, Kenneth. After graduation they married and together they created a beautiful home where they raised their family.

A true homemaker at heart, Norma was a stay-at-home mom who poured herself into her family and her community. She was an avid reader, a painter, and a joyful singer. Music was especially dear to her-she was a proud member of The Notables, a singing group that shared their voices and smiles by performing at local nursing homes.

Norma found happiness in simple, meaningful pleasures. She loved gardening and was famous for her canning-so many jars, of so many varieties, all made with care. She never missed a good word search or crossword puzzle and was always ready for a card game. Cribbage with Mark, Backgammon with Kathy, Scrabble with David, and the local favorite, 63-played men against women-were cherished traditions. She especially loved to recall the day her son-in-law finally beat her at 63… a moment she never let anyone forget.

Norma was also deeply committed to education and community life. She served on the school board that helped design and build Maranacook High School and was honored with the Boston Cane for Readfield, recognizing her longevity and community presence.

She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband; her daughter, Nancy; her daughter-in-law, Margaret Grover; her son-in-law, Dennis Sammons; and her dear friend and sister-in-law, Kay.

Norma is survived by her children: David and his wife Kathy; Christine and Alan; Mark; Katherine and her husband Paul; Steven and his wife Linda; and Stewart. She leaves behind a large and loving family including her grandchildren: Todd (April), Chad (Teresa), Sara (Tyrone), Laura (Charles), Dallas (Laura), Corinne, Maurine (Ray), Ben (Alexa), Nicole (Mary Catherine), and Andrew (Loretta), along with 15 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Linda Dyer, Mary McKenney, and MaineGeneral Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

A Mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church in Winthrop on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow at 12:30 p.m. at The Weathervane in Readfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Norma's name.

So sorry to hear of the loss of such a lovely lady. When I worked for Ken at CMP in the late 60s if we had to go to Lewiston we would stop and Norma would fix us lunch which in the summer always included fresh cucumbers from her garden. She was so nice to me and always welcomed me to have lunch with them.
