Norma was born to Stephen and Anna (Meyer) Benjamin on March 6, 1928, in Faribault. She was baptized and later confirmed her faith at Trinity Lutheran Church. Norma graduated with the class of 1945 from Faribault High School. While in school she was an accomplished pianist and saxophone player. After graduation, Norma worked at the State Bank of Faribault until her marriage to William E. Lyons on May 26, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Norma and Bill were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church in Faribault.
After farming with Bill for a few years, Norma became a stay-at-home mom, raising three children, Diane, Deb, and David. Norma's faith and church family were very important to her. She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, a supportive parent for her children's school and 4-H activities, and the longest-surviving member of Peace's card-playing Garbage Club. In 1958, Bill and Norma opened and operated Lyons Meats in rural Faribault where Norma wrapped thousands of packages of meat for their customers.
For many years Norma made weekly visits to all of the nursing homes in Faribault, and she became a senior companion. She was an avid reader who read her well-worn Bible every morning. Norma was a Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Josh Allen fan. She also attended as many of her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's ball games, dance recitals, concerts, and plays as she could. Norma shared her love for others by sending cards to family, friends, and acquaintances for every birthday, anniversary, and other occasions, often enclosing a long, handwritten letter.
Norma lived in the home she and Bill built in 1975 until moving to assisted living in 2025. She always enjoyed hosting monthly Euchre games at her home with a group of women from the neighborhood.
Norma is survived by her children, Diane (Larry) Kuchenbecker of Owatonna and their daughter Amanda (Derek) Arens; Deb (Galen) Lenway of Faribault and their sons Tim, Joe, and Chad Lenway; and Pastor David (Lori) Lyons of Schaller, Iowa, and their children Sarah (Scott) Hansen and Mitch (Alex) Lyons. She is also lovingly remembered by her great-grandchildren, Taylore, Josh, Matthias, Micah, Caleb, Mariah, Olivia, Addie, Ayden, Isaac, Conner, Aubree, Dean, and Evelyn, as well as other relatives.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William E. Lyons, her parents, Stephen and Anna Benjamin, and her mother- and father in-law, James and Clara Lyons.
