Norma Susan Uhran
In the early morning of Thursday November 21st, 2024, Norma Susan "Sue" Uhran, age 84, passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Sue was born to Norman and Helena (Pestinger) Holke in Salina, Kansas on September 7th, 1940. She was proceeded in death by her loving husband John J. Uhran, Jr, her brother Steven D. Holke and brother-in-law, George M. Uhran. Sue is survived by her children, John R. (Theresa), Michael N. (Kathleen O'Connor) and Anna H. (William) Wasierski as well as eight grandchildren: Megan, Christopher, Gavin, Joshua, Abigail, Sarah, Sean and Katelyn. She also leaves to cherish her memory her sister Mary Louise (Jim) Napier, sister-in-law, Alberta Uhran, 12 nieces and 2 nephews.
Sue graduated from Sacred Heart High School and Marymount College in Salina. She received a Rotary International Fellowship to study in Nancy, France and earned a French University degree. After returning from France, Sue started graduate school studying French literature at Purdue University on a teaching fellowship. There she was introduced to John J. Uhran, Jr. by a mutual friend and thus began their love story. They were married on July 2nd, 1966 in Salina.
Sue and John settled in South Bend and had three children. She spent her career at St. Joseph Grade School as the school secretary and also started a French program there which allowed her to put her teaching skills to work. She was actively involved in Christ Child Society, Granger Garden Club, Service Guild, Ladies of Notre Dame, and was a Sacristan and Lector for daily mass at St. Joseph Church. Sue used her sewing talents at Busy Hands and The Cassidy Costume Shop. She was an avid quilter and reader and loved crafting baby quilts for family and friends. She also enjoyed cross stitching, especially making cross stitch ornaments for her grandchildren every Christmas. Each of her grandchildren will start their adult life with a tree's worth of ornaments!
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, November 30th at 10:30am, followed by burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5pm on Friday, November 29th at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive,
South Bend, Indiana where a rosary will be prayed at 4:30pm.
