Norma Jean, 85, was born on June 14, 1940, in Hospers, Iowa, the daughter of Mince and Nellie (Steenhoven) Toering, she grew up on an acreage in rural Hospers. Norma attended Hospers Christian School and was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Hospers, IA.

Shortly after graduating, she moved to Denver, Colorado and worked as a nurses aid. After leaving Colorado, she moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and gave of her time to children at Bethany Christian Services. Norma also worked at Dr. Helder’s office working as his receptionist.

In the winter of 1978, Norma met John Van Wyk, and were united in marriage on January 27, 1979, at the Hospers Christian Reformed Church.

Norma became the mother of John and Shirley’s six children and devoted her life to God, to John, and the children. In their 46 years of marriage, Norma provided as a homemaker, as well as keeping the books for John’s tool business. She was faithful in her daily Bible reading and Women’s Circle Bible studies. Some of the things Norma enjoyed most were attending her grandchildren’s activities, reading, puzzles, card games with friends, plays and concerts.

We, as the family, believe Norma’s greatest legacy was to pass along her faith to her children and grandchildren, and it was her desire that we follow faithfully in our daily walk in Christ. Norma’s favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 26:3. One of her greatest joys was gathering with family and attending the Toering Family reunions.

She is survived by her husband John Van Wyk; her children consist of Doug Van Wyk, Mary Oleson, Dennis and Shawne Van Wyk, Karen and Kirk Quitno, Kayleen and Keith Van Voorst, Leann and Brian Subbert.

Norma has 16 grandchildren: Lake Van Wyk, Kimberly Beltman, Olivia and Brandon Tresemer, Owen Van Wyk, Kolton and Shay Quitno, Kameron and Lezley Quitno, Kadon Quitno, Alex and Tony Clinesmith, Amber Vander Veen, Haeley, Laina and Kambelle Subbert, and four great grandchildren. Dylan, Hailey and Hannah Baatz and Annalise Clinesmith.

Norma was one of thirteen siblings that she loved dearly: Henry Toering, Arnold Toering, Karleen Smitts, Rodney Toering, Alma Warren, Marilyn Trumpie, David Toering, Steven Toering, Myron Toering, Sharon Dykhuizen, Marvin Toering and Craig Toering.
