Norma Gay Stowers Westmoreland, 89, of Sutherland, VA, went to be with the Lord on January 16, 2026. Born and raised in West Virginia, she was married to Charles Raymond Westmoreland, Sr. (deceased) for 55 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Matt Stowers, mother, Bessie Stowers, sisters Sybil Manthei and Patricia Stowers, brothers Kermit Stowers and Robert Stowers, and brother-in-law, Henry Hogue. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Church Road and worked for many years at Howerton Willoughby Optical in Petersburg and Hawks Pharmacy in Sutherland.
Norma Gay was known throughout Dinwiddie County for her delicious cakes, pies, and fudge, especially at Christmastime. Her black walnut cakes were so good that some called her the “Black Walnut Queen of Sutherland.” She loved gardening, canning, and cutting grass. In the spring and summer, drivers on US-460 would often see Norma Gay on the lawnmower.
She is survived by daughter, Karen F. Westmoreland (Eileen L. Brown); son, Charles Raymond Westmoreland, Jr. (Jennifer); granddaughter, Madison Marie Westmoreland (Cameron Hendrix); devoted sister, Carolyn S. Hogue; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends thanks to the staff at Brighter Living Assisted Living, Mrs. Westmoreland’s residence since 2020.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 21 at 2 pm at Southlawn Memorial Park with Reverend Jonathan Dundalow officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital. The family is being served by Williams Funeral Home and Crematory.
