Norman Lee Payne passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, in the loving care of his wife Mickie Payne.
He would have turned 90 years old this September 2nd.
Norman was born in Capitan, New Mexico, and after a number of changing residences eventually came to Knoxville.
Norman, through and through, was truly a person who identified himself with a rural upbringing.
He could tell a story, spin a yarn, pull your leg, pull the wool over your eyes, recall a joke - from years past if the occasion called for it - and touch the funny bone of all who had the opportunity of being in his company.
Norman, although receiving only rudimentary schooling, Norman endeavored to be self-educated, and for many years was one of top supervisors for the Ingersoll Rand Company.
Along with Mickie, he loved to travel and visited all but 2 of the 50 states. Perhaps you were one who joined them on their travels and have many fond memories of those trips.
Norman married the first girl he kissed, and they enjoyed 54 years together, welcoming friends and strangers into their life and home.
He is preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Ila Mae Payne, his son Dean Scott and daughter-n-law Karen Scott.
Norman is survived by his devoted wife Mercedes "Mickie" Payne, sister Naomi Wadsworth and husband Don, niece Suzie O'Donnell, cousins Damon Payne, Windell Payne, Johnny Payne, their families, and many dear friends.
Norman will always be remember for his warm smile, soothing voice, sense of humor, kind heart, also a loyal friend and most of all a loving husband.
He will be missed by all. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Norman, please visit our Tree Store.
