Norval Keith Dawson, grandson of Norval Preston Dawson and Hazel Dawson Dyer, son of Norval Edward “Buster� Dawson and Mary Stine Dawson, was born July 1, 1936, died July 9, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long and very courageous battle with cancer.
Norval loved his family foremost.
He retired after 30 years from Joy Mining Machinery Company as a sales engineer and supervisor. During his tenure at Joy, he met and made friends with many folks in the coal industry, not only owners but the men working in the mines. Norval was sent to Brazil where he supervised the first mechanization of a large coal facility, and to England where he worked with the National Coal Board of England to set up operations in their mines. Prior to working for Joy, Norval worked 12 years for Carbon Fuel Coal Company. He graduated from East Bank High School and attended WV Tech.
Norval was past president of Sand Dwellers II Home Owners Association, Ocean Isle Beach, NC for five years and also past president of Whispering Woods Home Owners Association in Charleston.
Norval was a member of the Chelyan 158 Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M., 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and Beni Kedem Shrine Temple.
He loved fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling. He was featured in the West Virginia Game and Fishing magazine with a trophy turkey. He traveled to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Georgia Elk hunting and pheasant hunting. Most of all, he loved going to his brother Bob’s 160 acre farm deer hunting and turkey hunting from his “condo� in Braxton County, WV.
Norval was an Air Force Veteran and served his country in the Air National Guard.
He and his loving wife, Jewell celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary March 27, 2009.
Norval was preceded in death by his grandfather, Norval Preston Dawson, his grandmother Hazel Dawson Dyer, grandfather John R. Stine and grandmother Carrie Stine, his father, Norval Edward “Buster� Dawson, his brother, Thomas Dawson, Brothers-in-law Drexel “Rex� Cummings, Ralph Shank and Earl Lee “Wimpy� Hawkins.
Norval will always live in our hearts and be loved by his wife, Jewell Hamric Dawson, his mother, Mary Stine Dawson, his sister, Patricia D. Cummings Cottrell, her husband Don, sister, Helen D. Shank, sister, Hazel D. Hawkins Creasey, her husband Jim, sister, Nancy D. Gibson, her husband Charles, brother, Robert “Bob� Dawson his wife Nanci and sister, Peggy Jackson of Port Orange, FL, sister-in-law, Shirley H. Bowen, her husband Delbert of Waxhaw, NC, sisters-in-law, Joyce H. Thomas and Sharon H. Fisher, her husband, Bob of Monroe, NC and brother-in-law John L. Hamric II and his fiancée, Susan Acton of Lancaster, OH. His nephews, Michael Shank, wife Lisa; Terry Hawkins of Bridgeport, WV; Charles “Chuck� Gibson and fiancée, Amber of Naples, FL; Michael Barnett, wife Loraine of Forsyth, Montana, Robert “Andy� Fisher of Waxhaw, NC; John L. Hamric III, wife Heather of Lancaster, OH; nieces, Kathy Sergent, husband Tony; Kari Dean, husband Jeff; Lisa Roberts, husband David; Sherry Marcum of Ocala, FL; Sabrina Jones and fiancée Ken of Ocala, FL.; Tammy McKee, husband Brad of Waxhaw, NC; Kathy Spetrino, Husband David of Wilmington, NC, Mikala H. Moller, husband Andy of Greensboro, NC; great nieces and nephews, Kassie, Bryndon, Chris, Justin, Paige, Samantha, Emma, Rose, Taylor, Nicholas, Lane, Gavin and Kieah. Norval also leaves behind many dear friends and wonderful memories.
Norval and his family wish to thank Dr. Stephen Elksnis and his family for their love and support, Dr. John Brehm and his wife, Mary for their love. We would also like to thank Dr. Joe White and Dr. Jarrod Chapman for their compassionate care during this difficult time.
Wherever thou goest, Norval, we will go with you with all our love always and forever.
Visitation will be at 1:30 PM Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Southeast Church of the Nazarene, 5102 MacCorkle Ave, SE, Charleston with the funeral service following at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Ollie Parsons, pastor of the Southeast Church of the Nazarene and Rev. Dennis Bills, Pastor of the Winifrede Presbyterian Church. Entombment with Military rites and also Masonic rites by Chelyan 158 Masonic Lodge will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
