N.T. Watkins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Uht Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Mar. 29, 2026.
N.T. Watkins, lovingly known to many as "Pap," passed away on March 28, 2026, in Canton, Michigan, at the age of 97. He was born on January 7, 1929, in Balkan, Kentucky, and lived a long life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a steady, gentle presence that touched all who knew him.

He proudly served his country as a tank driver in the United States Army during the Korean War, a period of service that reflected his courage, discipline, and sense of duty. After his military service, he built a lifetime of honest work and dedication at Chrysler, where he worked until retirement. N.T. was known as a very hard-working man who did whatever was necessary to provide a good life for his family, and he carried that same determination into every part of his life.

N.T. was a loving, handy, and gentle man whose talents and interests were as memorable as his character. He loved to repair wrist watches and pocket watches, taking great care in the small details and finding satisfaction in restoring things others might have considered beyond repair. He also scrapped steel for extra money and was always tinkering in his garage, where he could often be found working with his hands and staying busy. He loved fishing, though he did not care much for eating fish, and he enjoyed passing the time playing cards, especially poker and rummy. Music was also a part of his life, and he played the harmonica and dabbled with the ukulele. In his younger years, he was a very good basketball and baseball player, and he continued to follow sports with interest throughout his life. When his grandson Carlos was younger, N.T. always made it a point to attend his games, showing the same loyal support that defined the rest of his relationships.

Those who knew him will remember that he was called "Pap", a name spoken with affection and respect. He had a quiet strength and a warm heart, and he made a lasting impression through his kindness, his practical wisdom, and his steady care for those around him. His family and friends will remember his sense of humor, his willingness to help, and the comfort of his presence. As the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." N.T. Watkins surely lived a life that made the lives of others easier, fuller, and better.

He is survived by his daughters, Teresa Watkins and Tami (Marty) Lozano; his grandson, Carlos (Maria) Lozano; his great-grandson, Logan Lozano; his great-granddaughter, Juliana Lozano; and his beloved cat, Wild Thing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Watkins; his father, Neal T. Watkins; his mother, Anna Miracle Watkins; his brother, Gerald Ray Watkins; and his nephew, Thomas Wade Watkins.

N.T. Watkins leaves behind a legacy of devotion, resilience, and love. His life was one of steady purpose and quiet accomplishment, and he will be remembered with deep affection by all whose lives he touched. Though he is no longer here, the memory of his gentle spirit, his hardworking nature, and the love he gave so freely will remain in the hearts of his family forever.
