Raleigh, North Carolina - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nutan Thakorlal Shah (Lovingly known as Nick Shah) on July 5, 2025. He departed this world surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity.
Born on January 26, 1946, in Bardoli, India, Nutan came to the United States in his twenties to pursue his education. Shortly thereafter, he married the love of his life, Hema, beginning a remarkable partnership of 52 years. Together, they built a life filled with hard work, adventure, and devotion to family.
Nutan and Hema first settled in Chicago, where they opened and ran a restaurant. In the early 1980s, they moved to North Carolina and entered the motel business, which grew into the family's hospitality company, Nine Points Inc., managing several hotels, including most recently the Holiday Inn Express and TownePlace Suites by Marriott in Raleigh. He also helped shape his community through his work in real estate and commercial development.
A respected businessman and community leader, Nutan was one of the founders of North State Bank, where he served with distinction on the corporate board of directors for 12 years.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Nutan will be remembered most for his warmth, humor, and his gift for bringing people together. His laughter could fill a room, and his kindness touched countless lives.
Nutan is survived by his beloved wife, Hema; his daughters, Nirali and Shruti; his sons-in-law, Ashish and Prashant; and his cherished grandchildren, Aarav and Naya. He also leaves behind his much-loved grandpets, Yogi (dog), Chai (dog), and Bincy (turtle).
Nutan's life was a testament to the power of hard work, the joy of connection, and the importance of giving back. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many whose lives he enriched with his generosity and spirit.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Nutan's life will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at:
L. Harold Poole Funeral Home.
