Obituary published on Legacy.com by Castle Ridge Mortuary - West Military Dr. on Apr. 17, 2024.
O. LaWayne Miller, M.D., a beacon of compassion and excellence in the medical community, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, in
San Antonio, Texas. Born on November 12, 1953, in
Weatherford, Oklahoma, to Otto LaWayne Miller, Sr. and Betty Russell Miller, his life was a testament to service, love, and the pursuit of knowledge.
LaWayne, as he was affectionately known, was a man whose brilliance was only matched by his kindness. Growing up under the vast Amarillo skies, he developed a passion for healing that would define his life's work. After years of rigorous study and dedication, he became an esteemed cardiothoracic surgeon, known for his gifted hands that saved countless lives. His work was more than a career-it was a calling, one that he fulfilled with humility and grace. He did both private practice and academic teaching. He claimed and loved all of his cardiothoracic residents.
He shared a beautiful journey of 45 years with his loving wife, Rita Miller. Together, they explored the wonders of the world, forming an unbreakable bond through their shared adventures and love for each other. LaWayne was not just a devoted husband; he was also a cherished son to his mother, Betty, a caring brother to Ginger Spielbauer (Tom), and a respected and dearly loved brother-in-law to Rebecca and Ray Robbins (Dianna). He was lovingly known by his family and close friends as "Junior".
He was a pillar of strength and support for his family, leaving behind a legacy of love and wisdom for his nieces and nephews Kevin Robbins (Dawn), Ryan Robbins (Demra), Marla Finley (Trey), Michael Huel (Traci), Ty Miller, Chrystal Edwards and Sammy Wenzel Jr (deceased) (Jodi). Though his father Wayne preceded him in death, his memories remained a guiding light in LaWayne's life.
His love of family extended to his fur babies Checkers, Wiley, and Sophie.
Dr. Miller's impact on the world was immense, yet he never sought acclaim for his contributions. His character was the embodiment of "The Fruit of the Spirit," manifesting in his selfless spirit, patience, and generosity. Those who knew him were touched by his gentle nature and the warmth of his personality.
Intelligent and kind, LaWayne's sense of humor brought laughter to many, and his genuineness made him a treasured presence in any gathering. He was the epitome of a generous soul, with a loving and giving heart. His hardworking hands were only surpassed by his heart of gold.
Outside the operating room, LaWayne enjoyed life's simpler pleasures. He was an avid golfer and water badminton enthusiast. Summer Sundays were worship at Oak Hills Church followed by "fierce" water badminton competitions with Rita, Becca, Chad, Sandra, Abby and Adam. Junior also loved his season tickets to the UTSA football games and was always in attendance with Rita, Danny and Melinda who were also his travel family and best friends. He relished the moments spent in the company of friends and the beauty of nature. His appreciation for God's creations was evident in the way he lived-fully and with gratitude.
Dr. Miller's legacy is not only one of professional achievement but of personal virtue. He was a man who lived his values and inspired others to do the same. His intelligence, kindness, and generosity left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we bid farewell to O. LaWayne Miller, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey filled with purpose, and a man who was, indeed, the sweetest and most intelligent in any room. His memory will be cherished, his lessons will continue to guide, and his spirit will remain an enduring presence in the lives of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. John Calhoon for staying by Dr. Miller's side through his illness and meeting every need. John wasn't just his colleague; he was a devoted and cherished friend.
