Olive Turner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kepner Funeral Home - Elm Grove on Apr. 28, 2025.
Turner, Olive Louise Schwertfeger, 95, of West Liberty, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Wheeling Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born February 1, 1930, in Wellsburg, WV, Olive was the beloved daughter of the late Charles and Catherine Garrison Schwertfeger. She was the heart and cornerstone of her family, a steady and loving presence whose influence spanned generations. As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Olive's home was a place of gathering, her faith a guiding light, and her love the bond that held her family close through every season of life.
Olive was a proud graduate of Ohio County Schools and West Liberty State College, later returning to serve as a dedicated teacher for Ohio County Schools until her retirement. A woman of unwavering faith, she was a lifelong member of West Liberty Christian Church, where she found great joy in fellowship and service. Her commitment to community extended to many organizations, including the Junior Women's Club, the PTA, The Order of the Eastern Star–Bethany Chapter (and formerly the West Liberty Chapter), and as a former member of the West Liberty Town Council. Olive's leadership also shone through her service on the board of the former West Liberty College Alumni Association and as a co-founder of the West Liberty High School Alumni and Friends.
Family was the heart of Olive's world. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her faith and her love for her family were the guiding lights of her long and beautiful life.
A passionate supporter of West Liberty University athletics, Olive rarely missed a chance to cheer on her Hilltoppers, especially the men's basketball team. Whether in the stands or watching from home, she proudly wore her black and gold and celebrated every victory.
In addition to her parents, Olive was preceded in death by her loving husband of 36 years, Leon W. Turner; her son, Brian Turner; infant granddaughter, Cathy Fink; her sister, Cleo Wilson; her brothers, Charles and Russell Schwertfeger; and her mother-in-law, Mildred Bertha Turner.
She is survived by her five children, Linda (Charles) Fink, Gregory (Patty) Turner, Arleen (Paul) Mullikin, Douglas (Belinda) Turner, and Jeffrey (Christina) Turner; her brother, Noel Schwertfeger; sister-in-law, Jean Schwertfeger; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 6–8 PM, and again on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 10 AM until time of service at 11 AM, all at West Liberty Christian Church, 201 Chatham Street, West Liberty, WV, with Pastor Dennis Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Prall Cemetery.
Arrangements by Kepner Funeral Homes, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311).
In honor of Olive's generous spirit and lifelong faith, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, West Liberty Christian Church, or Elkhorn Valley Christian Camp.

My deepest condolences to all the family of Olive. May God surround you with His love, comfort and strength. She was a remarkable woman. I first met Mrs. Turner as a 7th grade student a West Liberty High School. She was a fantastic teacher with compassion and interest in her students. After graduation as a member of the final class of the school, I lost touch with her. All things changed when she and others organized the WLHS reunions. What a precious gift they gave to all the former students. Over these many years and happy reunions she provided A venue for us to renew friendships and shared memories. These now yearly gatherings have kept our WLHS "alive." Saying hello to her at each reunion was always a must for me. It had taken a long while before she became "Olive" to me and not "Mrs.Turner." She was such a vibrant member and knew everyone. She will be greatly missed by anyone who knew her. She was deeply loved and admired. May she rest in the peace she so richly deserves. God bless her family and give them peace and comfort.
