Ollie Bernice Carter Mason Smith

SMITH, OLLIE (Age 79)

Ollie Bernice Carter Mason Smith was born on June 18, 1927, in Washington, D.C. She was next to the youngest of six children born to the late Ella and late Nelson Carter. Ollie departed this life on the morning of Saturday, July 1, 2006.

Ollie was baptized at Greater Zion Baptist Church at an early age where she attended Sunday school. She sang with the Junior Choir and also served as an usher. Ollie joined the New Samaritan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. where she worked with the young adult group. There she served on the Usher Board as the secretary.

As years passed, she decided to return to Sterling Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Junior Usher Board and then served as Usher Board Number 2. Ollie loved ushering and served in this role for over 17 years. Throughout those years, she attended many State and National conventions. She also served as Chairperson for Public Relations and supported the National Public Relations Department at the National Ushers’ Conventions.

She later joined Macedonia Baptist Church and joined the Usher Board. When Ollie’s sight began to fail, she continued to wear her usher’s uniform despite her inability to serve.

During her later years she was in charge of the Golden Age Luncheon held annually in Culpeper, Virginia. She was able to participate up until June 2005.

Ollie will always be remembered for her love of children and cared for many of them. throughout the years.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving sons – Lee Mason and Eric Mason; her loving relative considered a daughter – Shirley Harper; daughters-in-law – Natalia and La Vida; grandchildren – Verlon Lee Mason, Lisa Mason, Erik Mason, Kimberly Mason, Steven Mason, Ngoc Mason, Danielle Jordan, Kisha Greene, Tamiika Smith, Tieranny (Penny) Sherrill, ZaKia McDow, and predeceased, David Ortiz; great-grandchildren – Vera-Lee Mason, Kevin and Niyla Smith, and Kai McDow; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, July 6th, 9:00a.m. until time of service 10:00a.m. at Peace Baptist Church, 8221 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, Virginia. Interment will be held in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Midland, Virginia. Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A.
