Mrs. Opal Chaney, 98, of Galesburg, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Marigold Nursing Home surrounded by her family.
She was born September 15, 1924 in La Grange, Missouri, the daughter of Taylor and Kathryn (Shanklin) Beary. She married the love of her life John M. Chaney on October, 5, 1941 in Black Rock, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2012.
Opal is survived by her three children Rose (Ted) Olson, John (Rosalie) Chaney, and Sam (Susie) Chaney all of Galesburg. She was also a proud grandmother of six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 70 years, her parents and 2 brothers, Chester and Leonard (Dee) Beary.
Opal was a homemaker all her life and volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and First Baptist Church where she was a devoted member and worked with the youth group for many years. She enjoyed gardening and loved to quilt, knit, and sew. She made sure every family member had a beautiful handmade quilt. She loved her children, all of her grandchildren and family was everything to her.
Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, 23, 2023 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg chapel. A private grave side service will be held at East Linwood Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Galesburg.
