Opal Lavatus Hayes, 79, of Louisa, Kentucky, passed away on January 23, 2026, following a brief illness. She was born on January 9, 1947, the daughter of the late Hershel and Tennessee Sweeney Prater.

Opal was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 60 years, Sterling Hayes; her son, Sterling Hayes Jr.; her daughter, Molly Hayes Dixon; and her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her loving children: Nick (Sabrina) Hayes of Webbville, KY, Howard (Angela) Hayes of Louisa, KY, and Eric (Susan) Hayes of Louisa, KY; ten grandchildren: Carrie Hayes Kitts, Lance Hayes, Heather Hayes, Matthew Hayes, Kayla Hayes Kelly, Scott Hayes, Cody Hayes, Gabriel Hayes, Tony Hayes, and Nick Hayes, along with several cherished great-grandchildren: Taylor Hayes, Makayla Tussey, Addison Skeens, Kelsey Hayes, Chandler McKinster, Kendra Kelly, Evelyn Hayes, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Opal dedicated much of her life to her family. She worked for many years as a seamstress at the Louisa Sewing Factory and then retired as a homemaker. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was the heart of her family and found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved.

Opal will forever be remembered for her unwavering dedication, kindness, and deep love for her family.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 12:00 with Rev. Jerry Hughes officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hayes Family Cemetery on Apple Hollow Road.

Care has been entrusted to Wilson's Funeral Home.
