Opal South Obituary

Opal C. South, 95, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2025 at Good Samaritan Luther Manor in Sioux Falls. Opal was born 3/26/1930 near Meckling, South Dakota to Otto and Margaret (Reardon) Peterson. She graduated from Meckling High School. She married Robert South on 10/30/1049 and were married almost 74 years. She is survived by her children, Debra (Istvan) Szkok, Donald (Susie) South, and Carole (Steve) Winter, all near Sioux Falls. Grandchildren include Emily South, Betsy (Zach) Kiesow, Lacey Shupe, Sam (Kiley) Winter and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Cleo Stephan and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert South, parents and 8 siblings, Bernice Charrlin, Stuart Peterson, Harold Peterson, Margie Kibble, Florence Larson, Richard Peterson, Esther Peterson, and Helen David. Opal did daycare and decorated many birthday, graduation and wedding cakes so she could be a stay-at-home mom. When her children were in school, she worked as a teacher's aide at Emerson Elementary School and Crippled Children's Hospital and School (now Lifescape). Opal was a great cook and baker. She and Bob collected antiques and refinished many of their purchases. She learned to quilt and made many beautiful handmade quilts. She also knitted hundreds of dish clothes. Opal has donated her body to USD School of Medicine so others can learn. There will be no services. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Opal, please visit our Tree Store.
