Ora Lee Corbett

Ora Lee Corbett, beloved Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, departed from this world on January 6, 2024 in Clarksville, TN. She was a remarkable woman whose legacy of love and empathy will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born on November 20, 1936 in Hopkinsville, KY to the late Elbert Matlock and Lillian Taylor Matlock; Ora Lee Corbett was a woman of indomitable spirit and unyielding determination. At the tender age of eleven, she unfortunately lost her mother and found herself thrust into the role of caregiver for her younger siblings. With unwavering strength and devotion, she assumed this responsibility and dedicated herself to their upbringing. This early experience shaped her compassionate nature and instilled in her a deep sense of love for others. From an early age, Ora’s heart was captivated by the love of God. She wholeheartedly embraced her faith and was baptized. Her dedication to God was evident in every aspect of her life. Ora deeply cherished her church and actively participated in its ministries, spreading love and hope to those around her.

Despite life's hardships, Ora always displayed gratitude and humility. Her unwavering faith in God provided solace during difficult times and served as a guiding light throughout her journey. She never ceased to express her thankfulness for all that she had received.

Ora’s educational journey was one characterized by perseverance and a thirst for knowledge. She attended Pembroke Elementary School and graduated from Attucks High School in Hopkinsville, KY. She also graduated from Burlington County College in Brown Mills, NJ in 1973. Ora worked at Burt Cobb School from 1964 to 1968. Education remained an important facet of her life as she understood its transformative power.

Ora’s life took a beautiful turn when she married the love of her life, J.D. Corbett Sr, an honorable soldier serving in the military. Their union was blessed with three wonderful sons, J.D. (Toni) Corbett Jr., Quentin (Melva) Corbett, and Kelvin (Ester) Corbett Sr.; whom they raised with immense love and care. As a devoted mother, Ora instilled in them the importance of faith, family values, and the pursuit of knowledge. Ora stood strong as she supported her husband during his active-duty assignments that took them to different corners of the globe. Embracing these opportunities with open arms, she sought to immerse herself in various cultures so that she could share those experiences with her family.

Ora proudly volunteered at ACS in Fort Campbell from 1968 to 1973, despite the temporary nature of her positions due to her husband's military obligations. She extended her kindness and care to those who needed it most, leaving an unforgettable mark on the community she served. After her husband's retirement from service, Ora found stability and was able to fulfill her calling as a caregiver once again. This time, she lovingly tended to the needs of her dear aunt, providing comfort and support. Ora's selflessness shone brightly in every act of service she performed. In addition to being a devoted caregiver and volunteer, Ora held various odd jobs throughout her life. Regardless of the task at hand, she approached each one with dedication and integrity. Her strong work ethic and willingness to do whatever was necessary exemplified her character.

Ora’s greatest source of joy stemmed from her family. Her children and grandchildren were the lights of her life, and she delighted in being an active participant in their lives while providing constant love and support. She always showed them what unconditional love truly meant.

As we grieve for the loss of Ora Lee Corbett from our physical world, let us remember that her spirit lives on in the love she shared, the kindness she embraced, and the impact she made on so many lives. Ora Lee Corbett's legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May her selflessness, compassion, and unwavering faith inspire us all to live lives overflowing with love and kindness. In honoring her memory, let us strive to be the light she was for so many, knowing that her spirit will guide us always.

Survivors include her three sons, J.D. (Toni) Corbett Jr., Quentin (Melva) Corbett, and Kelvin (Ester) Corbett Sr.; sister, Suzy (Charles) Matlock; brother, Otis (Sue) Matlock; loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, J.D. Corbett Sr, and her sister, Fanne Matlock.

 

Visitation services will take place at Gateway Funeral Home on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted at Greater Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville, TN on Friday, January 12, 2024, beginning at 10:00 AM with burial following at Kentucky Veteran's Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, KY at 12:00 PM.
