Orion Keith Ray, born March 27, 1954, to Lebert and Helen (Callaway) Ray in Taft, California, went home to be with our Lord on November 13th, 2025 in Bakersfield, California surrounded by his family.
Keith grew up on a farm in the Cuyama Valley, working alongside his father in the alfalfa fields. This rich agricultural landscape shaped his life and values and he learned the importance of faith, hard work, and loyalty. He shared his childhood with five sisters, whose company and closeness helped form the strong family bonds he cherished throughout his life.
In 1976, after years of helping on the farm, Keith began working for ARCO Oil Company. During this time, he also devoted himself to raising his three daughters, who were always at the center of his world.
Keith returned to school in 1999 to earn his ASE certification, determined to pursue his passion for mechanics. He opened his own auto repair shop at his home in Ventucopa, California, in 2000. Keith never needed to advertise; his honesty, skill, and reputation brought him all the work he could handle through word of mouth alone.
Keith married his beloved wife, Charlene on August 8, 2000. A constant presence in the Cuyama Valley, Keith was known for his kindness, his practical wisdom, and his willingness to lend a hand. Keith loved cars-especially restoring classic models. He enjoyed attending car shows and took pride in his own car collection. He cherished time spent with family, whether close to home or traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. Family gatherings, storytelling, and simply being together were some of his greatest joys.
He will always be remembered with deep affection and love by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Charlene Ray; his three daughters, Jodie, Kerry, and Erin; his two stepchildren, Jimmie Owens and Judy Owens; a large and loving family of grandchildren, Kylee, Colten, and Clay (Jodie), Paige and Jace (Kerry), Domonique, Makayla, Clark, and Thomas (Erin), Addyson (Judy), and six great grandchildren; Mariannna, William, Laney, Stephen, Ella Rose, and Catalina. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Carol Hudson, Joy (Ted) Burgess, and Pam (Jim) Mitchell and many other beloved family members. Keith is predeceased by his sisters Alta Harp and Ann Clutter.
A memorial service will be held at the Cuyama Community Methodist Church at 4807 Caliente Street, New Cuyama on Saturday, December 6th at 2pm. Honoring Keith's wishes, there will be a BBQ in the spring for all who can attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hoffman Hospice Home in Bakersfield who provided compassion, comfort and a beautiful space for Keith and his family to spend together during his final days. Donations can be made at https://hoffmannhospice.org/donate.
