Otis Mims of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2023, surrounded by close family and friends. There to greet him on the other side were his parents Virgil Lee and Nellie Bea Mims, his brothers Virgil Lee, Jr, Glover, and Charles Mims, and his sisters Jessie Wells and Mildred Thomas.
Otis was born on March 21, 1938, in Atlanta, Georgia to Virgil Lee and Nellie Bea Mims. He grew up in southwest Atlanta along with his eight siblings. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1956. Shortly after graduation, he attended Morehouse College and worked at the post office for a while until he accepted a job as an Engineer at Lucent Technologies, Inc. He worked there until he retired in 2000. He had a very active lifestyle. He loved the outdoors, playing tennis, and walking with friends. He was an avid reader and enjoyed going to Barnes & Noble weekly to browse around for a new book and to have his favorite drink, chai tea. He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching football, basketball, tennis and golf. And he loved to travel. His job allowed him to travel all over the world and he loved sharing those adventures and photos with friends and family. Otis was a loving man with a great sense of humor. Most importantly, he was a Christian and was very charitable and would not hesitate to help others in need. Additionally, he was a devoted son, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather.
He leaves behind his six children: Prentice Mims (Sonji), Penny Mims, Kimberley Mims, Nicole Green, Noel Green and Crystal Green; his three sisters: Madeline "Shirley" Mims, Dorothy Fair, Sadie Whitmore (Curtis); his nine grandchildren: Philantria Mims, Jimmy White ll, Phylesia White, Kyler Ingram, Roman Green, NinaRose Mims, LauraGrace "Nicole" Mims, Guidance Green and Ryan Green; one great-grandchild: Andrew Parrish Jr, along with several nieces and nephews, and many other loving relatives and friends.
