Patricia Collard Obituary

An incomplete corner of the universe was put aright when Pat returned to her beloved Ed on January 13, 2022.

Born to Mary and Vestus Mahoney on May 4, 1935, Pat was the first baby born in the "new" Heber Hospital. She was supposed to be named Nada Lou, but Vestus got up in church and blessed her with the name Patricia.

Pat grew up in Heber City, Utah, and attended Wasatch High School. There she met the love of her life, a tall, skinny country boy named James Edward Collard. From their first date forward they were inseparable. They were sealed by Elder LeGrand Richards on April 20, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Their first home was a shack (literally) on Gold Hill where Ed worked in the lumber mill. They then lived briefly in St. George before moving to Salt Lake City. In 1962, Pat and Ed built a home in Bountiful, Utah, where they made lifelong friends. That home was the site of numerous parties over the years. No matter the group, Pat was always willing to be the hostess.

As a child, she liked to play "office." What began as childhood play became a career both at home and in the workplace. Her record-keeping was impeccable and exhaustive. This expertise led to one of the highlights of her life. During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City she had the opportunity to work as a Press Marshall for the Figure Skating events.

A faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pat served in numerous leadership and teaching positions. Her favorite callings involved directing and playing music, including playing the organ in the Bountiful Temple.

Pat was a proud member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, often serving in leadership positions. She belonged to a Literary Guild for which she often worked long hours preparing book presentations for their monthly meetings. She also supported her community by regularly donating blood.

Pat and Ed enjoyed seeing the world from as far away as China and Tahiti as well as close to home. They owned several houseboats over the years and spent many wonderful days at Lake Powell. After they sold their last houseboat, they built a cabin at Strawberry Reservoir, which their multi-generational family continues to enjoy.

On July 1, 2010, Ed suffered a traumatic brain injury after a fall at their Strawberry cabin. For the next three years Pat selflessly served Ed as he at first made a partial recovery and then as dementia took his soul. She was his champion, fighting doggedly for the care that he needed. Her love never flagged even when he no longer knew her.

After Ed died in 2013, Pat lived in their home until August of 2018 when she moved to Barton Creek Assisted Living. Several months prior to her move she was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's dementia. When her condition necessitated a higher degree of care, Pat moved to Barrington Place Alzheimer's Special Care Center where she lived until her death.

Pat is preceded in death by her eternal companion, Ed, her parents, and her brother, Marves Mahoney. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Eileen and Craig Sorenson, Barbara and Ryan Farnes, Bryant and Pam Collard, and Emily and James Christensen.

She is also survived by her sister Linda Davis, 17 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren (plus two more on the way).

Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 22, at the Val Verda Stake Center, 2651 South 500 West, Bountiful, UT., where a public viewing will be held from 9:00 - 10:30 prior to the services.

Pat often had our annual Block Christmas Party at her home for all to enjoy. She was also the hostess for our ward Book Club for many years. We were both long time member of the same Daughters of the Pioneer Camp. We will certainly miss her!!
