On March 13, 2023, Patricia Ann Kreiling passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home in Norfolk, Virginia.
Pat was born in Flintstone, Maryland, on January 17, 1933, to Lyle Gilbert and Hazel Mullenax. She was raised by Hazel, her stepfather Paul Scott, and a tight knit extended family, including her beloved Aunt Midge.
Pat grew up with few material possessions but, in her words, "everything you needed back then." She spoke fondly of nights on the front porch with Grannie Mullenax playing banjo and often regaled her grandchildren with stories of growing up with her grandmother and aunt nearby. Though Pat did not like to swim, she had plenty of stories that started "by the crick."
Pat loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed traveling with Jim and attending Ali Ghan Shrine events. An introvert by nature, Jim pushed Pat just a bit out of her comfort zone in all the best ways. Jim, Jack, Rodger, Marge, and the multitude of friends met through the Shriners created a circle of friends that Pat considered to be close as family.
Pat was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She saved every birth announcement, card, scrap of newspaper, photo, and memento. While her daughter Susan often lovingly (and not incorrectly) called her a "pack rat," Pat's efforts have saved countless memories for her family to now enjoy, for which they will be forever grateful.
Other than her family and friends, Pat was most devoted to her dogs. Pat considered her dogs to be her children, and she could often be found sneaking bacon under the table or wrapping up pieces of her dinner at a restaurant to bring home to them. Even when her memories slipped as she battled dementia, she always had a smile and a pat for her beloved dogs.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Jim, daughter Susan, and many more relatives whom she held closely in her heart. She is survived by her children Joe Davis, Al Brewington, Cindy Weaver (and husband Ed), and Beth Ann Meller (and husband Derek); grandchildren Misty (and husband Dennis), Jenny (and husband Chris), Sam (and wife Sarah), Laura, Kristal, Jamie, Derek, Sean, and Brian; and great-grandchildren Jane, Betsy, Davis, Peyton, Eleanor, Hank, Ivy, Barron, Garett, Jasmyne, Aubree, Marcus, and Hailee Mae.
Services will be conducted on Monday March 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A. at 202 Greene St., Cumberland, with the Rev. Dr. Marsha Bell officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will be hosting a luncheon after the ceremony and welcome all who loved Pat to attend.
