Patrick Bryant Baxter, known affectionately as Patrick, was born on March 17, 1964, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He passed away due to natural causes on November 18, 2023, in Morehead City, North Carolina. He lived a life of service, kindness, and courage, touching countless lives with his generous spirit.
Born to Helen Roberts Woodward of Winterville, North Carolina and the late Jere Bryant Baxter, Patrick grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee. He was a beloved brother to Gina L. Gonzalez (Cruz) and a cherished uncle to his three nieces, Kacy Poff, and Olivia and Amelia Gonzalez, all of Madison, Alabama. He was much loved by his three maternal aunts, Shirley Hohn (Phil) of Colorado, Linda Soland (Craig) of Arizona, and Sheila Roberts of Idaho.
Patrick was a proud graduate of Clarksville High School and of the Army training program as an Operating Room Specialist. He later earned his Registered Nursing degree from Pitt Community College in Winterville, NC. His classmates recognized his inspiring nature and support by presenting him with a Spirit Award. Patrick's professional life was a testament to his wide-ranging skills and adaptability. He worked in various capacities, from restaurant hospitality to veterinary service, and finally as a behavioral health nurse, always bringing his unique blend of kindness, professionalism, and dedication to his roles.
Patrick was a man of many interests and passions. He found joy in cooking, fishing, kayaking, gardening, and other outdoor activities. He had a keen eye for antiques and took pleasure in refinishing antique fans. His love for muscle cars was well-known among his friends and family. But above all, Patrick was a compassionate soul who was always ready to extend his help to animals and humans in need.
Those who knew Patrick best would describe him as courageous, kind, and friendly. His courage was evident in his service to the country, his dedication to his nursing career and his courageous battle with the cunning, baffling, and powerful disease of alcoholism. His kindness shone through in his readiness to help others and his compassionate care for animals. His friendly nature endeared him to many. As Toyohiko Kagawa said, "God alone knows the secret plan of the things he will do for the world using my hand."
Patrick's life was a testament to the power of kindness and the value of service. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, generosity, and courage will continue to inspire those he left behind. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Patrick's memory might consider The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, other environmental organizations, or your local animal shelter.
