Passed away peacefully at home on December 14, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 16, 1959 to the late Martin F. & Ann M. (Lynch) Coen, Patrick was a kind-hearted guy with keen sense of humor. He was the consummate storyteller who would always spread joy through laughter. Most of the time he laughed so hard telling his stories you couldn't help but laugh waiting to hear the punchline. Pat was a man of great intellect. He was so mechanically inclined he could repair absolutely anything. He was also a man with many hobbies and talents. He had a great love for music (especially the Allman Brothers) and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar and harmonica. He was an amateur photographer and a collector of all sorts of memorabilia. In his younger days, he enjoyed riding his cherry-red Harley Davidson motorcycle, surf fishing along the beach and always putting his big catch up on the wall as a self-taught taxidermist. An antique car enthusiast, Pat enjoyed attending car shows with his classic 1964 Galaxie 500 nicknamed "Big Red". Pat also loved playing the horses at Delaware Park and was a lifelong Phillies fan. He enjoyed travelling, having toured Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris, London and his favorite, Dublin, Ireland.
Pat attended St. Elizabeth Elementary and Delcastle High School. Upon graduating in 1977, Pat began a forty-year career as a pipe fitter, with the majority of his career spent employed as a sprinkler fitter with Wayman Fire Protection. In 1982, Pat was instrumental in forming the Sprinkler Fitters Local Union 669. Affectionately known as Chatty Patty by his coworkers, Pat will always be remembered as a reliable, hard-working man who had a heart the size of Texas.
Pat is survived by his brother, Martin F. Coen, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann; his brother, best friend & travelling companion, Michael P. Coen and his partner, Andrea Brinton; his sister, Maureen Dunning and her husband Michael and his cousin, who was more like a third brother, Paul Coen. He is also survived by the loves of his life, his nieces and nephews, Kevin Coen (Kristina), Shannon Xarhoulakos (Michael), Erin DelgiObizzi (Michael), Martin F. Coen III (Marissa) and Michael Dunning. His great nieces and nephews, Theo, Ryan & Jordan Xarhoulakos, Hailey and Blaze DegliObizzi and Martin F. Coen IV.
The Coen Family would like to extend our gratitude to Accent Hospice for all for their support and help with Patrick's care. Most of all we would like to thank two of the most wonderful nurses in the world, our cousin, Karen Phillips and friend, Julie Moorehead who came out of retirement to care for our brother during his time of need. It was through their kindness and compassion that we were able to grant Pat his final wish, to remain in his home during his final days.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Church,1500 Cedar St., Wilm., DE, on Monday, Dec 23 at 10:30am. Friends may call at the church from 9:00am-10:30am. Interment will take place at Cathedral Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Patrick's memory to his favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, stjude.org or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).org for pancreatic cancer research.
