Our sincere condolences to the Helms family upon Pat's passing, he will be missed. Pat, Dori & their beautiful daughters lived across the street from my parents for many years. They were what a true neighbor should be and assisted my parents countless times over the years in many ways. It was a privilege to have known Pat, and I am blessed to have called him my friend. Fly high Pat, blue skies forever.

It was an honor to be able to take care of Mr. Helms. He brought a smile to my face everyday I came into work. I loved being able to create art with him, style his hair in the morning, and of course pick out a classy outfit everyday for him to wear. Mr. Helms will forever and always hold a special place in my heart and as I finish nursing school I will always remember his words he would tell me, "you will be a great nurse because you know how to make me smile." Little did he know he was the one who brought the joy into my day everyday. Mr. Helms, you were a true gentleman and one of the most caring and gentle people I have ever met. Thank you for your impact you have made in this world, I will never forget your beautiful heart.

My husband and I were privileged to know Pat and Dori in Albuquerque for too short a time. The obituary is so perfect for the Pat we knew. His smile was easy and classic and fronted genuine interest and care for anyone who crossed his path. He was truly a bright spot in our lives and was the epitome of a Good Man. We treasured our times with Pat & Dori.

I am proud to say that Col Helms swore me into the Air Force Reserve on 17 January 1975. He told me I was the first women that he had ever sworn in. I thought that was very special for him to say that.
May He Rest in Peace,
Melba Smith, MSgt

My wife and I had the honour to meet Pat and Dori during their visit in Cold Lake, Alberta in 1989. Susan was on an exchange tour with the Canadian Air Force as a flight test engineer. Before I took Pat fishing, Susan told him he had to catch dinner for about 15 people attending the next day BBQ. He was a bit skeptical at first, but then fulfilled that mission and more as we had fish fillet leftovers. I wish we could have had many more opportunities to fish together.
Pat and Dori hosted me in Florida for the STS-78 launch. I was treated like family. I feel privileged to have known him. He was a class act. For me, Pat will always personify the best of the American character. He is forever etched in our memories.

I´m so sorry to hear of Pat´s passing. I flew with him in the 304th ARRS in Portland, Oregon in the early 70´s. On one flight, a "point A to point B" operation, we had time to talk about training and readiness at which time he said "I´d go anywhere with you guys". That comment meant a lot and I never forgot that. RIP, LTC Helms. Bruce Fontaine, USN/USAFR, Ret.
