Patrick Hurley Obituary

Patrick Joseph Hurley, 65, of Rockaway Township, NJ passed away on June 4, 2025 after a long illness.
He was born on May 7, 1960 in Baltimore, MD to Robert and Dorothy Hurley. After moving to New Jersey, the woods, sand pits and river that stretched for miles behind the house were his playground, and his dirt bikes were prized possessions. He loved mountains, forests and lakes, avoided cities and was a natural leader.
Patrick learned his trade of rolling steel & garage doors starting at age 16 working with various companies before finally opening his own business. Today, Durable Door Company in Denville is run by his brother, James, & his son, Ryan.
Patrick is survived by his wife of 41 years, LeeAnn, his children: Katie & Justin Picinich, Ryan Hurley & Lindsey Liefken, Emily Hurley, and his grandchildren Henri, Hayes, and Rowan Hurley, and Aiden, Emma, and Liam Picinich, and his siblings Kathy Hurley, Mary Hurley, James Hurley, and Susan & Mark de Fazio, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Patrick's life will be celebrated by family & friends on June 22 at Jefferson House in Lake Hopatcong, NJ between 12-4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MPN Research Foundation or Alzheimers Foundation of America.

I first met Mr. Patrick Hurley on a Memorial Day weekend camping trip to Frost Valley, NY in 2007. I was invited by his nephews-my friends-and it was on that trip I also befriended his daughter Emily. From the start, Patrick was warm, confident, and made a stranger feel like family.

He seemed at home in those woods. After we climbed Slide Mountain, I remember a look in his eyes-as if he´d returned to the 1980s, when he and his brother James first began the tradition. At a pool beneath a small waterfall on Biscuit Brook, I found myself imagining what it must have been like to be there with them back then. They said the stars were even clearer in those days.

The last time I saw Patrick was in 2015, while I was delivering packages in Rockaway. He was walking his dog. Though it had been years, he recognized me instantly, and we spoke for a good while-like no time had passed at all. That moment stayed with me, a reflection of the quiet warmth and genuine presence he brought to the people and places he cared about.

In 2013, Emily revived the annual camping trip that her father and uncle started, and we´ve kept the tradition going every year since. Patrick Hurley´s memory will remain with us-around the campfire, among the trees, and under the starlit sky.

My heartfelt condolences to the Hurley family. May his spirit continue to guide us and live on in the traditions and connections he helped create.
