Patrick Ng Obituary
Published by Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park on Apr. 30, 2014.
Patrick Yeunnong Ng was born on May 3, 1947 to Dr. Pek Si Wu and Ngar Ching Lam in Nanking, China. He was the third of six children and served as the head of household after the untimely passing of his elder two siblings and his father. He graduated from Pui Ying High School in Hong Kong in 1967. He was diligent in his studies and was accepted as an international student that same year. During the summers, he worked in the family restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. In 1969, he transferred as an electrical engineering student to San Jose State University. There he met Kim Lam through his roommate, who was also her church friend. He accepted Christ and was baptized in 1972. They married in November 1973. He often said the greatest achievement in his life was marrying Kim. They had two daughters and one son.
Patrick was exceptionally industrious and family-oriented. He was employed as a computer systems programmer for various large Bay Area companies throughout his career. In 1980, he founded his own translation and interpreting company, Asian Connection, where he enjoyed helping those in his native Mandarin and Cantonese. After hours, he and his wife supported the family restaurant, Blue Sky Chinese Restaurant, in San Francisco's Sunset District. Over the years, he also sponsored his siblings and their families to emigrate from Hong Kong to the United States. After early retirement in 2003, he enjoyed serving others through his language skills and babysitting his grandchildren.
Patrick loved learning, collecting, culture and nature. He organized articles he found interesting and made efforts to stay informed on almost any topic. Even while watching television, he would take copious notes. He enjoyed collecting almost anything, especially beautiful rocks, paintings, books, and antiques. He often passed his interests onto his grandkids, making them homemade toys and starting scientific collections for them. He loved to travel and to experience different cultures, especially ethnic music and dance. A family trip to China and cruising with family and friends were some of his favorite trips. He also loved good food. Buffets were a favorite three-hour affair.
In February, Patrick was diagnosed with lung cancer. Despite aggressive treatment, he passed away peacefully on April 30, 2014, surrounded by his family and friends. He is survived by Kim, his wife of 41 years; daughters Melody (Vernon) Lee and Monica (James) Burnette; son Eric; his five grandchildren; and the families of his younger brother and two sisters. We will always remember his tenacity, strength, curiosity, generosity and humor. We will miss him greatly, but find peace that he is now forever in God's care.
