Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snyder Funeral Homes, Dowds Chapel on Oct. 8, 2025.
Patrick Edgar Tomes, a sunny, ornery, and much-loved 21-year-old with severe disabilities and a huge heart, died Monday, Sept. 8, at the Central Ohio Hospice unit at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark, Ohio. Patrick, born Nov. 17, 2003, spoke rarely and with only a few words, due to his chromosomal disorders that caused seizures and other physical and intellectual issues.
However, he expressed a broad range of feelings and needs without words and charmed his family, caregivers, teachers and friends with his delightful sense of humor, being sneaky, and always keeping his mother on her toes.
Both a graveside service in Sept. and a Celebration of Life in Oct. are open to family, friends and caregivers. The graveside service will be 1:00 pm, Thurs., Sept. 18, at Green Valley Cemetery, 9288 Green Valley Rd.,
Mt. Vernon, Ohio. A month later, Patrick's "Celebration of Life" will be 6:30-8:30 pm, Friday, Oct. 17, at Cornerstone Church, 4905 Jacksontown Rd., Heath, Ohio.
Longtime family friend, Pastor Bill Hagerman, will conduct both services.
Family and friends are invited to bring written "Patrick stories" about precious moments with Patrick and his influence in their lives for family to enjoy at a later time.
Patrick is survived by his mother, Lisa J. Tomes of Newark; his adored big brother Christopher Farrell, of Cincinnati; grandmother, Angelina (Ann) Hewey Tomes of Granville; his aunt and uncle, Pam (Doug) Jones of Hanover; first cousins, Cale (Kristen) Jones and Krystal Jones; plus many extended family members. In addition, longtime friends who served as family are Sharon ("Nana") and James ("Poppy") Wiggins, their grandson, Charlie Bush, who was Patrick's best friend since kindergarten; and Judith Waite Allee (honorary "Aunt Judith"), longtime friend and caregiver.
Patrick was predeceased by his grandfather, Newman Tomes, and his great-granparents, Daphne Tomes, Edgar Tomes, and Angelina Shippee.
The miracles God performed throughout Patrick's life spoke to many people and will continue as his wordless but powerful testimony is shared. Many lives are better because he was a part of them.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends are invited to donate items or cash so that Patrick's mother can provide "Patrick Packs" to children undergoing 3-to-7-day seizure testing. The GoFundMe link about the "Patrick Packs" project to honor Patrick's life is https://gofund.me/eda325c58.
The GoFund.Me link offers directions for sending either monetary donations through organizations such as PayPal or a bank, or for shopping from a list of physical items needed that you can bring with you if you attend one of Patrick's services. The GoFundMe site also has a link for questions: https://gofund.me/1bfe35532
On request, Lisa can arrange for volunteers to pick up donated items in the Newark area that can be used to create "Patrick Packs," such as school-type backpacks, hot/cold insulated cups, gift cards for meals for parents and visitors, and snow hats that reduce itching from the glue that attaches electrodes to the scalp during seizure testing, etc.
