Obituary for Paul G. Alderman

Paul G. Alderman, 75, of Ellensburg, WA, passed away suddenly April 21, 2023.

Paul was born May 16, 1947, to Henry and Gertrude Alderman, in Outlook, WA, the youngest of three sons.

Paul received his early education in Outlook, then attended Sunnyside High School, graduating in 1965.

He attended Yakima Valley Community College before he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for two years, including a one-year tour of duty in Viet Nam.

Following his discharge, Paul attended Central Washington University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1972.

Following graduation, Paul was employed by the Bank of Yakima in the Yakima and Ellensburg branches. While employed by the Bank of Yakima, Paul met the love of his life, Paula Parks, who was also a bank employee at that time. They were married in 1976 and made their home in Ellensburg.

In 1975 Paul invested in a partnership with Bob Butterfield, owner of Butterfield Chevrolet in Ellensburg, and subsequently became sole owner of the dealership, which became Alderman Chevrolet, which he operated for 25 years.

During that period, Paul was also involved in a number of other business ventures in the local area.

He also owned and raced a late model stock car on short tracks in Yakima, the Tri-Cities and elsewhere in the Northwest.

In 1999, Paul purchased Tri-Cities Raceway near West Richland, which he operated for a number of years.

Paul is survived by his wife, Paula, and three children, Erin Tebay and husband Calin, of Pasco, Amy Brantingham and husband Jay, of West Richland, and Brock Alderman and wife Claire (Layman), of Ellensburg, as well as a brother Lou Alderman and wife Jane, of Yakima, and six grandchildren: Conner, Jack, Stella, Mac, Otto, and Broderick.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Verl Alderman.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12 at the Rexinger Barn 291 Aviator Lane, off Kittitas Highway.

I met Paul in 1980 through my dad Marshall "Slim" Martin who was working for him at that time when visiting from Portland Oregon for July 4th celebration with my family. The engine in my car literally exploded while on my way to Cle Elum and Paul was very helpful in getting me into another vehicle. To the family,SO SORRY for your loss.

The best memories of Paul are that every time I saw him he always had a big smile on his face. So glad to have known him.

Knowing the pain of this loss from my own recent experience, I can only imagine what your family is going through. I had made plans with Paul the week before to visit Ellensburg on my annual trek through the NW to visit friends and family. What a terrible shock for all of us. Our prayers are with you daily. I am only sorry that I cannot join in the celebration of his life on Friday. God Bless you and keep you through this difficult time.

When Kathy and I moved back to Ellensburg in 1980 to take over the Thayer-Case Real Estate Company I asked my father who were the business leaders in Ellensburg that made a difference. Among the handful of names given Paul Alderman was included. That didn´t surprise me because having worked in real estate in Yakima I had dealt with Lou Alderman, a major and successful developer and agent. As an owner of a business in Ellensburg I needed all the advice and encouragement that I could get. Weekly breakfast meetings with Paul and a couple of other successful business friends were critical in decisions I was making. These guys didn´t have to take their time to chat with me about tips for a successful operation but here were men who were wealth creators that weren´t given their businesses. When I decided to run for the state house of representatives in 1990 I asked Paul to be my campaign chairman, as if he had nothing else to do. He agreed after telling me that I was nuts and that I would ruin my business by the diversion of attention. He was, of course, correct. I lost the race and eventually, my company. Self-made men like Paul Alderman don´t come along very often and for those of us who knew him and counted him a friend the loss is substantial. Our comfort is in the family he left behind who were a critical part of his resounding success.

Paul and I grew up very close. Their family was about a mile away from ours and we spent much time with them. I remember a lot of "Fox and geese" in the snow. I remember going through all his baseball cards and picking our favorites. We were in the same class all through school. I will sure miss him. My love and condolences to Paula and the family.

Paul certainly did many wonderful things in his life. But for me, the very best thing he and Paula did was raise a wonderful son, Brock, who has graced our family with love and a constant mindfulness in appreciating the little things. Paul's legacy lives on in our family. I am thankful for that. God bless him.

Paul was a legacy and mentor in Kittitas County. He had always supported the local youth as well as many other organizations. He would never walk by without smiling and saying Hello. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
